My TBI computer chip programing thread/adventure.

Gotcha. I have a line on a degree wheel. Think I'll borrow it and dial myself in and see where I'm at. Pretty sure I'm retarded ;)

Well speaking of being retarded, you'll notice that i have a knack for getting ahead of myself... Today i decided just for fun to put my curiousty to rest. I lathered on my snake oil! The resulst were, interesting? I plugged my original computer in, opened up winaldl(familiarity breads content) Dialed in the adjustment, and ran it. Had it idling in park at about 30kpa and in gear 40 kpa. But heres the thing, last time i messed with fooling the map sensor with a vacuum pump it idled out smooooth. Silky even. This time, not so much. Still had the stinky exhuast and what felt like a miss near as i can tell. So then i had another curiousty that i had to put to bed, how did the plugs look?!? Would the plugs show me that infact i do have a miss? I dunno. But nonetheless, i pulled the plugs. And here is the resulsts and the reason i say i have a knack for getting ahead of myself. I should have pulled them before i messed around with the old comp and snake oil dangit! So, Tell me what you think.

And because you all know i love taking video!

With that, i can say that instead of plugs giving me answers, it raises more questions...

Some were/are rich, some are lean, one is misgapped. Put a new set in. What is your fuel pressure?

If these are coated with soot then so is your O2 sensor...

Fuel pressure is 11psi. I hear ya on the o2 being coated now also. I plan on tossing in a new set and then running it again with the tuned chip and see how that looks. I noticed the one was gapped tight. Got a lot of time to mess with it tomorrow, so im going spend all day messing with the stupid thing! Also, something sorta strange that i noticed is that the blms at idle, with the original comp with the map altered were much higher then the chipped comp even with 20% fuel removed. Crazy eh? Im more and more convinced that i need to read my orgininal chip! Just need to figure out how to do it!

11 PSI is low, should be 13... have you changed your filter? Try the gage on another truck to see if the gage is low, or try another gage.

New plugs, new O2 sensor and start with an ADSU chip.

Noi havent changed the fuel filter. Its been at 11 psi on two different gauges. I thought 11 was in spec? Isnt it like 9-13 psi? Im not willing to buy a new o2 sensor yet. I would if it ran worse with it in closed loop but a it is, it runs better in closed then i can make it run in open. I can try messing with the adsu chip. Whats the difference between it and amur bin?

I see you have a T400 so better start with that chip. ADSU is 5.7L 700R4 in 1990.

GM spec is wrong! If you ain't got 13 it ain't right! Yes it will run 9 to 13. But I have yet to see one run correctly under 13. That's hardly any pressure for an injector and one pound is a big difference.

If your not going to put in a fresh O2 then give up trying to get it right, at least take it out and clean it. They make O2 sensor cleaner but I have used brake clean and electronics cleaner on them.

Ended up not messing with it today. Tossed the plugs back in and pulled it out of the garage to pull the 77 in. Probably get back to it in a couple weeks.

We can continue where you left off. It's not easy to learn new things. You have learned way more than you think you have. Enjoy the success you have accomplished.:waytogo:

Thanks Dave. Coincidentally, to pull it out of the garage I whipped out a quick asdu chip that was simply -10% ve at idle and +2* timing at idle and it actually runs kinda good... I didn't run it long enough to really tell but maybe it ran better because I gapped all 7 of tys plugs that were at .045" to .035" and gapped the one at .010" to .035" also... The strange thing is that when I first started it it died almost immediately. Then I started it with my foot on the gas a tad and it wanted to die and tried to but didn't, after that whole episode, it seemed to be running really well. Mildly curious to play with that a little more. Corse, I do still have my map adjuster dohicky hooked up too.

Tuning a chip is really a venture into an engineering experiment. The factory never made a manual on how to reprogram the prom. The only difference between the factory engineers and us DIY prom programmers, is the factory engineers know things we don't know YET!:doah: I think the "fun" in tuning a chip is what new things you learn from trying different things / parameters.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to get back to this thing soon. I woke up in the middle of the night having some crazy thought about the blm and how the o2 cross counts affected it and stuff like that...

Well, just as a tiny update, it runs better then with slightly tuned asdu bin and the map adjuster in place adjusting the map to a higher vacuum reading. Also, I have been looking threw and studying tunerpro very often and noticed lots other adjustments that i think would help me out. Maybe. There are something like 25 scaler differences between asdu and amur bins. Some if those ate afr and o2 thresholds also there is a difference in almost every table between the two. I think I'm going to first remove he map adjuster and play with any of the settings that I noticed that are vs. Map or vs. Baro and do it starting with asdu. On a side note, it runs near butter smooth in park yet in gear it still "surges" I got a crappy video of the episode but you can hear music in the background that is pretty distracting.
