My Turn at a BUILD THREAD, Updated 9-4

i have a rigid hone, but i don't want to disturb the bore shape in any way. but i talked to the machine shop, he said it would be just fine, just to make sure i wipe down as much as i can and spread it good with oil. i though it would be good, but i just wanted an opinion from them.

didn't do anything yet tonight, had to clean up the yard today since it was fairly nice out and i had the day off.

If it were mine I would just hit the bores lightly with a green scotchbrite pad. It really does a good job on light surface rust like that and you probably wouldn't even touch the crosshatch. Maybe ask your machine shop though if you have any concern.

WD-40 is NOT what i'd use on those cylinder bores. Take some new oil and apply it to all the clean metal surfaces, then bag the engine block, that should keep rust from forming on the cylinder bores easily. Apply a nice coat to everything, I like to use a paint brush or something similar, had motors in plastic bags for years with no signs of rust. Another option is the cam lube that they sell in quart sized bottles, and this won't have to be reapplied like the motor oil. As it won't "drip" as quickly.

the top ring is .033", its right between the .0075" and .008" end gap per inch of bore as indicated by keith black for this application. yes they are moly rings.

i went out today to check on the block, the crank is fine, no rust at all, not even any discoloration. the block on the other hand... the gasket surfaces are good, little spots of discoloration that i probably can get up with a razor blade. the bores had some rust. i wiped it down the best i could with shop towels and some wd40, but there is still alot more discoloration than i would like and i can feel something. i don't want to risk the rings, so im gonna talk to the machine shop tomorrow after i pick up my check and see what he thinks should be done if anything. ill see if i can get some pictures of what im talking about.

but for now, im going to go work on the front axle. i got the yoke today. i just need to modify it to work with the seal. it looks like its for a new style axle, the seal is acutally on the yoke it self and not in the housing.

Are you running Hyper pistons? Seems a little high on the gap to me, but thats me.
Try to get some desicant (moisture absorbant) to put in the bag. If you can bag it, when its dry out, and don't open it when its humid, that should help a lot.

well thats what happened to me, didn't realize it was so humid and opened it up and seen the water.

im running keith black hypereutectic piston, they have the top ring moved closer to the top of the piston. with it closer it expands more and needs more end gap. KB recommends .0065 to .008 per inch of bore of gap on the top ring only depending on what the motor is being built for. i choose the .008 per inch because of what i do with my truck. i though the gap was high also, but the machine shop told me that when i told them what pistons im running and the sheet from KB says the same thing. ill get a side pic of the pistons.

but i got it together the other night, all except i FUBARed one top ring with the ring compressor. ill have a new ring on tuesday then i can seal the bottom end up.

finely got the axle seals installed, had to make a driver out of a 42mm socket. i turned it down with the lathe, squared then end and welded a 3/8" drive 9/16" socket into the 3/4" drive end so i had enough extensions to drive in on. i forgot to take pics of the socket or driving it on, but ill try to get some within the next few days.

but on to the pics

initial pattern check with .039 pinion shim, pinion too shallow... its nice having a press :D

after changing to a .030 pinion shim with .010" backlash

what do ya think about the pattern? it looks real close. i wanna try to tighten the backlash a bit yet though.

Finely i have enough parts that i can start to assemble stuff for my truck.
first the 454, this is what i started with

after being at the machine shop for 2 weeks, it comes back to me bored .030 over with new cam bearings, soft plugs, crank ground .010/.010. completely balanced rotating assembly (3 slugs of mallory metal at $60 a peice!!!). i also have .133" dome hypereutectic keith black pistons, moly rings, ZZ502 roller cam, GMPP springs, brand new flywheel from GM, Professional Products balancer, PP air gap intake, and a hole boat load of small stuff from GM. total so far is just over $2500 and i haven't done anything to the heads up yet, not to mention the only thing i have from the heads up is the intake.

but here is what it looks like currently, everything to assemble the shortblock
PICT0005.jpg

tomorrow it all goes together. :woot:

i while bored on sunday waiting for the machine shop to call, i also completely dissasembled the front axle i will be using. its the front axle that was in the m1009 military blazer that my dad bought. it was partially disassembled and probably in the best shape of what i had laying around.

all i need is the 1350 yoke and i have everything to put this together. hopefully ill start putting this together tomorrow after i get everything i can done with the 454.
you can'tbring any power to the mounds.TJ:haha: :haha:

been working on the front axle some more.
i got the gears where i want them. not much better that i had them before, but i tightened the backlash to .007". the coast side is alot better now.

i also got the ball joints in and knuckles installed. i also installed the sky tall steering arm at the same time. the thing is BEEFY. i sent the knuckle to Kert to do the machining.

IMG00002-1.jpg

sealed it up and put new spicer ujoints in both sides. all i have left to do with the parts i have is clean the spindles, install the spindle bearings and seals and put those on.

IMG00004-1.jpg

i still have to dig up my spare set of 8 lug hubs and backing plates.

funds ran dry (working 4 8-hour days doesn't cut it), i was waiting to get some more money so i can buy the few parts i need to put more together. i picked up the head gaskets friday, so as soon as i get some garage space ill be buttoning that up.

my truck leaves here monday to a friends that has more space to work on it. ill update with pics then.

i wanted to keep the votec EFI, but it'll cost me too much to go that way being that i have no harness and no computer. im going with the 770 truck averger carb. i love my qjet, but have had issues with mud buildup on the sides and it doesn't work right after then.

Manny, ill keep that in mind. thanks
here they are.:D :D look at that box!!!been through 10 moves and it looks like mice have been tearing the box up for shelter.

thats the same thing i had on my small block, gold moroso. they were too preaty for my truck. its too bad i already have some valve covers on order.

here are a few updates, didn't get done what i wanted to, but its something.
i got a new camera phone and been using it to take the pics, seems preaty good to me.

my truck is loaded ready to go to my friends
Sep03_0001.jpg

here are my heads i picked up from the machine shop a couple weeks ago.
Sep04_0001.jpg

049 casting, Ferrea stainless steel 2.19 intake valves and 1.88 exhaust valves, gasket matched, mild porting and port cleanup. i CCed the heads at 120cc's and with the domes i am using comes to about 9:1 compression. i was hoping for a little more, but this will work. it also has the zz502 dual valve springs, and 10degree retainers and locks.

hopefully i be able to update before the weekend with the heads on my motor and start disassembling my truck .
