So today I took the pickup for a drive. It rans great. Nice smooth idle when in Park and a nice mean little lope when it was in a drive gear. So I get back to the house, park it, do some honey do's since I have been gone and go back out take the sway bar off and such getting ready to put the lift on it. Well I top off the radiator with antifreeze and got to fire it up to take the trash to the dumpster. Welll it runs like crap. I can't get it to idle by itself for nothing. So I adjust the idle screw and get it to odle for itself and commence to take the trash down the road. Ran fine, to the dumpster, 2 blocks away, it even sat and idled for a little bit. Well I get back in and decide to take a longer run back to the house and it starts running like PURE T CHIT. I get it to the house shut it down and look for some vacuum leak, welp nothing. I go to start it and nothing at first. Hold the starter a little longer and it comes to life. Still running like a 3 leged dog.

It only sems to do this when it gets a little warm.
What am I not looking for? Timing is right, and it is getting fuel and fire:confused:

More details, carb or tbi etc... Sounds like to me a fuel problem. How long did it sit for? Did you take it and hit some bumps get some sediment from the tank and its causing you not to get the correct fuel pressure. Thats were I would start

this question does not deserve an answer. It's friday and you promised naked women with your title. How am I supposed to convince the wife I am looking at truck porn and not real porn, when I am covertly trying to look at real porn on a truck porn website?

No more answers until we see some juggs... Well maybe a little help... But first what fuggin carb ya got yo ?

Sorry about that, but running a Rochester Q Jet. I thought it was the carb so I replaced the carb today with another I bought off of here. Ran fine for a 20 minute ride, then I let it sit for a few hours and went to go somewhere else and bam the problem came back.

The tanks sat empty for about 6 or so months, I flushed them and filled with fresh fuel about 2 weeks ago.

And for the Jugs

sounds somewhat like the mysterious but not so mysterious problem i had with my 71k-5.....

what will you give me if i tell you?

So it runs like crap when it's warm? I'd look into your fast idle settings and your choke pull off. When it's cold, the idle speed screw shouldn't change anything. The fast idle cam should be what the throttle is resting on. Also make sure your idle mixture is right. Could be that when it is kicking from fast-idle to idle, it could be getting bogged down by a bad mixture. Also could be that the fast idle should be faster, and the idle bumped up a bit too.

i will second that, are you running an HEI?

Oh, sorry, just read your second post about how you swapped the carb.

I'd look into your ignition system. I had a distributor that would do this kinda thing to me. The timing changed by itself all the time, would run like a raped ape sometimes, other times it would run like crap. I messed with the carb forever, and even swapped it. Finally replaced my plugs/wires, and it got a bit better. Swapped the dist, and the last of the gremlins finally went away and left my motor alone. The weights for the advance looked pretty crappy in the old dist, and the springs were pretty sad too. Who knows if the vacuum advance worked either.

if you ARE running an HEI, and have a spare around, try swapping out the ignition control module, thats what was wrong with mine. IF you dont know what the ignition control module is, labeled as ign control, # 13 on this page.

All right thanks for the advice, now out to the shed to see if I can find my spare distributor and try that. I am running HEI with an Accel Coil and 8.8 wires and the Accel header plugs. I replaced the wires and the plugs when I re-sealed the engine.

Uh, try a distributor cap! The coil could be breaking down but the cap on Hei Distributors are known for getting cracks in them and or carbon tracking the insides to the mounting screw location. Also if replacing use the thickest Quality cap you can find. Blue Streak caps were the shiznit when I was wrenching.

Update

Well replaced the ignition module and the rotor button todasy when I got home. Took it for a drive and seemed to be doing fine so far. The test will be tomorrow when I drive it to work and do my errands in it. I will post up the results tomorrow.

Thanks John, If this fails, I will buy another one and try that out.

Check your plug wires. My 91 was doing that a while back. Would run fine while cold but when it got warmed up started misfiring, not wanting to idle at red lights, and just overall running like crap. Took me forever to figure it out. I changed fuel filters and lines, plugs, distributor, checked timing, the list goes on and on... but in the end i found one of the plug wires had somehow got a burnt place in them. This may not fix your problem since mine is TBI but hey, its worth a shot. Let me know if this fixes your problem.
