My brother in law just bought a 97 1/2 ton pick-up with 6.5 TD. He bought it right at closing time, got the deal done...but while he was putting his plates on it (it was idling) it ran out of fuel.

so, anyone with 6.5 knowledge. How different is it to bleed the air out of?

I know it's an electric fuel pump, is there a bleed petcock somewhere?

He really needs this thing up and running for work Monday. I'm hoping to go out there tonight yet and give him a hand.

There should be a bleeder on top of the fuel filter. Open it and crank the engine bleed the air there. If it still wont start you might have to crack the fittings at the injectors and crank it over to get all the air out. That is just the basic stuff for any diesel engine. Maby the guys in the diesel forum have a better faster way for the 6.5
IIRC there is a wire on the injector pump you have to un plug also but I am not sure what year(s) that applies to.

that sounds familiar to the 6.2. :)

That is how I did it to my Cummins. Crack the fitting at the fuel filter until fuel started coming out. I sealed the FF fitting and then cracked as many injectors as I could get too and started cranking on the motor until diesel started seeping out of the injector lines. I sealed the injector lines and cranked on it for awhile and it started rough for about 20 seconds and then smoothed out and ran fine.

Thanks guys, it has an electric lift pump and I had read a relay needed jumping to bypass the OPS. I wasn't sure what to unplug at the IP as it's computer controlled.

He claims it ran out of fuel, but i highly doubt it because when I got to his place the tow truck driver got it running using a blast of ether just before I got there :doah:

His new to him truck may have PMD or OPS issues and it just did the classic hot stall.

At any rate, it was purring like a kitten when I got there. Sure sounds good. My bro-in-law was telling how it had a new muffler and exhaust pipe because this was what he was told. When i heard it running and could hear the turbo through the tailpipe i knew it was straight piped. I told him there is no way that his new truck had a new muffler, dropped my trouble light under the truck and showed him. He was a little surprised...FWIW, a 3" straight pipe behind a 6.5TD has a very nice aggressive tone to it, and hearing the turbo through the exhaust note is pretty cool. Not loud enough to be annoying though.
