Basically non of the gauges in my 83 Jimmy work and I am not good with electrical so I took to my local mechanic. It does not have the original engine all the engine wiring has been cut up and modified - He is recommending that I purchase a new complete engine wiring harness in lieu of try to decipher current. Looking for recommendations? Should I just purchase a universal Painless Performance or EZ Wiring engine harness kit? Any other options?

Also, he is recommending I try to find a complete gauge cluster that I know is working, any suggestions on where to find?

Thanks

I would suggest not buying a new cluster.

The stock gauges are very tough, if none of them work it's almost certainly not a problem with the gauges. If the harness has been hacked up, fix that first, see if the gauges work. If they don't, pretty easy troubleshooting, certainly easier if the truck is torn apart to replace the wiring.

Can't comment on the wiring, '83 is going to be a bit different due to the location of the dimmer/wiper switches, so a later donor isn't really an option unless you want to change the cluster bezel and column as well.

oil, ignition, starter, choke.... what else am i missing? not counting lights or wipers there isn't much of a harness to speak of. I'm with dyeager535, clean up the harness then trouble shoot the gauges.

If it's just the engine side of the fuse panel harness, I agree it's not really that complex, but there is a fair bit of wiring...starting, charging, ignition, headlights/marker/turn signals, horns, wipers, washer pump.

But if I was going to re-do all of that, I'd be looking at the headlight mod, I'd convert over to the later windshield washer pump in the reservoir, etc.
