Need A Bigger Alternator

I am running a soundstream tarantula 700/2 amp. I think its a 700 continuous watt amp but has a 1400 or 1600 watt peak. Im pretty sure all of my grounds are good because I just put the engine in last summer and I made sure everything was fine then. Part of the problem is my volts dropping below 10 and when the subs hit it actually drops the oil psi by about 5 psi. Another reason why I want a larger alt is because when I am listening to music at a loud but reasonable volume, if there is a song with quite a few bass notes in it, there isnt enough power for the amp and it will kick off for about 5 or so seconds and then kick back on. Its quite annoying in the middle of a song. I dont listen to rap so the amp isnt demanding THAT much power. Im saying its kicking out on DAVE MATTHEWS which definitely doesnt have much bass. Im kind of opposed to caps because they can actually worsen the problem if the cap gets drained. I also dont want to be shocked due to a cap when I try to work on my truck. Does anyone know what the stock alt on my truck puts out at idle? Could be I just need an alternator that will put out a bit more at idle. Thanks.

But regardless, lets try and help the guy with his cahrging system. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

One thing that would bother me with running an alt. any larger than around 120 amps or so is what kind of ampreage can the stock wiring take before the wiring heats up? That has always been somewhat of a concern of mine. Keep in mind the stock wiring was designed with a 78 amper on hand. If I'm correct.

Oh common. Dave matthews is alright. Nowhere near as good as led zeppelin or neil young but I like his stuff.

I went to autozones website and the replacement alternators they offered for my truck are 94 ampers. I guess thats that came stock.

I found a 145 amp alternator on ebay that charges at 65 amps at idle. Does that sound like enough amps at idle to you guys?

I have the stock gm 87 alternator on my truck right now. When I turn my stereo up, the amplifier is demanding way too much power. The voltmeter sometimes drops below 10. The largest alternator I can find for my truck is only a 145 amper. What alternators that fit other makes or models will fit on my truck and offer in the 160-200 amp range? Thanks.
BTW- Im semi-poor so the price needs to be under the $200 mark.

[/ QUOTE ] My first job was rebuilding alternators in a small shop. I recomend calling some local shops that rebuild alternators and see how much they'd charge too rebuild your current alternator too put out 160 + amps. You may also want too install a cap for your amp.

I know what it's like too be on a budjet, I can't afford too go out and buy new, so I've learned too do some things alittle cheaper. Now on the other hand, there are other things where I do spend more for the higher quality. But in this case, I think a local rebuild shop can do what you need and save you a few bucks. The standard Delco 7127 is a fairly easy Alternator too work with.

(Cap it) put 1.5 farad of capacitance in there and be done with it. I'm running nearly 1500 watts (RMS) in my commuter car and never have my lights dim during the transient bass notes. Also remember that the gauge of your ground wire should be the same size as the 12v power=friggin huge. I also believe that a cap's clean up the input power and eliminate alt whine and other electrical noise. I spent waay too much money and time tweaking this stuff back in the day....now I just enjoy the tunes on my hour commute. (no ghetto blasting or pissing off the neighbors necessary)
