Alright so I have my truck, shortbed frame, dana 44 scooted up an inch, sm465/208 case. My driveshaft is definately in need of lengthening. I've been quote $200 fore a shop to do it... Too much for my blood. With recently taking on the responcibility of managing my own bills and money I've come to learn the value of said object.

I'm wondering what I can get a front driveshaft out of that will be about 2-3in longer than my current shaft, which I believe is 1.5-2in longer than a stock shaft. Since I'm clocking my tcase when I do my trans this has gotten a little more urgent.

Even if its a little too long, cutting it down and rewelding is something I can do on the cheap.

If I remember correctly a local kid took a front shaft out of an auto longbed dodge and was enough for his dodge with 11in of lift.

Basically my question is what can I look for that will have a 5in longer front shaft than my stocker.

Having a shaft shortened and balanced around here is only $100. If you find one that's too long, it's probably the best way to go.

Edit: I mean having one shortened is usually cheaper than lengthening it.

Yeah and seeing as how its the front I can shorten it myself and then just have it balanced.

i dont know about where you are, but the bad-ass driveshaft shop here tells me that you cannot just bring in a driveshaft you welded togther and have it balanced...it has to be pressed and ****....its not like mounting a tire and bringing it in to get balanced afterwards....and if you can tack up a round driveshaft and have someone else weld it, then why cant you tack up a square driveshaft and have someone else weld it? and by the way, if your **** is not all-time 4wd than a balnanced front driveshaft isnt even that big-a-deal.... $0.02

Yeah honestly I want even gonna worry about getting it balanced. Just repress the end into the tube and weld it and be done.

I looked into just getting a new slip joint put on one, shopped around locally and couldn't do better than $190, so I said screw it and got a brand new one with longer slip for $235 (note: includes shipping, includes custom length). Plus the longer splines should be more durable. Quality looks good and so far no problems:

P.S. if you want a stock one from a 700/208 truck to play with and you're willing to pay shipping, P.M. me.

That's true, I thought in later years they got different tranny-case adapters to make up the length differences.

The 400/241 front shaft is the same as a 700/241.

Would a 400/208 shaft be the same as a 700/241? The 400/208 is in a CUCV and the 700/208 is a stock shaft from an 89 K5.

I don't think it would be the same because of the longer pinion on the 60 and the length of the 700, but I thought I would ask incase someone could confirm for sure.

Sorry for the hijack.

Could you take that measurement? If its a few inches longer than mine I'll definately take it. I think it might work because an sm465 is alot shorter.
