Im narrowing a front axle for my scout, don't like the full width. I'm cutting the housing down today or tomorrow but Ive ran into a problem.

I have a bunch of 10 bolt shafts but I have to cut too much off to get past the neck down area of the shaft, which is needed to be able to cut new splines.

Looking at pics of dana 44 shafts they look like the will work but I would really like a measurement. So if someone can get me a measurement from the end of the spline to just past the neck down area I would much appreciate it.

I really only want to cut 3" from each side but can go as far as 3.5 if needed.

Coming from someone whos done this before just cut the long side down to use a wagoneer shaft. Theres two lengths available. I got an off brand chromo long side for cheaper than anyone could respline a stocker for from rock auto...

That would be great if it would work. Unfortunately though, Im not cutting a 44 so the only way 44 shafts will work is to respline them. I also have to cut from both sides. If I cut only the long side and move my perches my driveshaft will contact the oil pan.

Dutchman axle will cut and respline a pair of shafts for $90.

Ack that was naive of me lol. Totally missed the 10 bolt part. Thats a good deal. Mosier wanted like $150 a side! I just think they dont want to be bothered honestly.
Sorry I couldnt be of more help...

To be honest, I have not kept up with this thread well enough to actually be sure what you are doing.
But your title struck a nerve.
This is the left front shaft out of an '89 F250, Dana 44. Independent front suspension.
Solid side, of course.
I just replaced it due to the damage to the inner seal area. I'm sure I could have had it welded and turned back down, but I could get an entire shaft with U-Joint for much less than that would have cost.
I kept the old shaft, because there are just too many uses for tough pieces of steel.....

If you need more accurate measurements of any one part, let me know.

Stomis- thanks for trying anyway. If I were using a 44 I would be doing exactly as you say. But seeing as I have a pile of 10 bolts with all the parts except the axle shafts to build the front end I want for my scout, I didn't think it would be worth the effort or extra money to track down a 44 and the parts to build it.

There is a shop local to me that narrows axles. I called them about replining some shafts and they told me they send them to Dutchman. I figured I can do the same and their prices are pretty reasonable.

Fordum- that was exactly the measurement I was looking for. Thanks.
