is this a brand new harmonic balancer, or an old one with a speedy sleeve on it (harmonic balancer repair sleeve)... with the sleeve on, it doesn't quite go in as far (but the difference is negligible since the belts still line up with the pulley on
it is a brand new one. both mine and my dads only have about 1/8th of an inch gap. but a friend is putting a brand new motor together with a new aftermarket ballancer (also tried a stock one) and they go all the way on but he says that he has like 9/16ths of an inch gap and it just dont look right.
I just received a car with running small block , and the outer balancer had seperated , all belts line up and the balancer outer half had room to sit behind the remaining balancer and spin with the engine and rub cover .
The difference is probably in the part that fits on the crank, his may be longer. Some small blocks were built with short waterpumps and some are long style. So I think the dampner has different spacing as well........and I could be so far off base its not funny. Hope that helps.
