Does anyone know what the end play should be on a 205 idler gear assembly? I thought there was a bible on Pirate but i'll be damned if i can find it.

Thanks, just for reference where did you find that info? I just did a search on the web and found something that said no endplay but idler gear must be free rolling. So .008" max sounds about right. Thanks for the quick reply.

Found it in a Pirate search and that spec was in a post made by GrumpyOldFart... I looked for more and that was all I can find.

It sounds about right because I have a 205 teardown and rebuild VHS tape, and Jason4x4 relayed the intructor's words to me the reason for using the dial indicator. And I remember him saying that was the maximum spec allowed when adding or subtracting shims.

Well, i pulled the idler gear back apart and there are 4 shims (as should be) and two of them measure .042" thick and the other two measure .005" thick. If i only use one of the .042" thick shims i still have a bunch of end play and if i use both .005" shims i don't have enough and the idler gear won't roll freely. Now i need to locate some more shims or remove several thousanths from the spacer.

That's kinda weird. What was the reason for taking it apart? Rebuild?

I've torn my ford 205 apart and reassembled a couple of times just for practice but that's about it. I won't get into it further until I have enough funds to get the rebuild kit and then I'll measure the endplay.

Scott, I thought I remembered the spec being closer to a couple thousands. I'll check tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I have some 205 shims laying around that I could send you.

I'm building this case for a buddies friend who's doing a doubler and the main reason for taking it apart is to machine the front input bearing hole larger for the 32 spline input bearing. It actually doesn't surprise me that i discovered this problem since i found out that someone else has been into this case recently and there were "parts" laying loose in the bottom of the case.

Why can't people that don't know what they're doing just leave it to someone who does. :dunno:

Oh well, guess people have to learn somehow and whoever "repaired" or whatever they did didn't learn the right way on this guys t-case. Now i'm here to fix it correctly. 205 cases are really quite simple and i wish i could build these all day long.

That would be awesome. I don't know what thickness i need but obviously somewhere between .010"-.042". My guess would be that i'm going to need roughly around .020" to add to the two .005" shims i already have. Whatever you have and are willing to send would be great though. I'll send you a PM with my addy.

How much do you want for them?

Some people.... heh...

Keep us informed, I'm interested in the different shim sizes added or subtracted to shrink the gap for the endplay. Just in case I run into this on another case, I have two 205s to go through.

Any word on if you have some shims?

Sorry, I was super busy today. You've got a PM.

Also, this is the spec from my '77 factory overhaul manual:

Looks like .001-.002" to me.

Uh oh... I hope mine was in spec when i took it out since i didn't check that when I put everything back.
