My 700r4 in my 86 k5 decided to suddenly let go today after 241,000 miles of faithful service. Currently it is a 350/700r4/208 with 10b front and rear. Im trying to decide between swapping in a sm465 or purchasing a new 700r4 from monster transmissions or a comparable company. I planned on swapping out the 350/700r4 for a 454/sm465 in the future however because the tranny let go sooner than expected I would prefer to get a sm465 and wait on the 454. As far as the sm465 swap this is the list of things I think I will need:
-sm465 10 spline input, 32 out?
-bellhousing
-465 to 208 adapter/coupler?
-clutch pedal
-hydraulic clutch linkage (will go to the aftermarket for this)
-clutch

Is there anything else on my list I forgot to add or didn't think about? Will I have to get a new driveshaft? Does the transmission crossmember need to be replaced/moved? Any help would be appreciated as I am trying to figure out the cost involved for this. Given that I am having knee surgery next week and maybe one more time this summer I am taking it to a friends dealership that will help me out on the labor costs a litte. Any info or help is greatly appreciated.

Look for a 465/208 combo, they're somewhat common. GM got a bit smarter as the years went by and made all the different tranny and T-case combo's the same length. The 465/208 combo is the same length as the 700R-4/208 combo...so your shafts should be fine.

No need to head to the aftermarket for the clutch stuff. '85-91 was factory hydraulic clutch...your 86 will have the dimples in the firewall already for those parts.

All the manual trannies were 1 1/8" 10 spline input. The 465/208 saw it's first year offered in 81, and was 32 spline output.

This is a fairly straight forward swap using nothing but factory parts...as long as you find a good donor, or someone selling a very complete set-up it shouldn't be hard at all. Probably the suckiest part is doing the pedal hanger swap as you need to pretty much remove the steering column to get it done.
