Im looking at an 88 Chevy Cheyenne 1500 its 4x4 188000 miles usual michigan rust not too bad actually 350 not perfect but a good work truck 600 bucks here is the kicker the transmission is supposed to be bad they said it only goes 15 mph I dont know what all could be wrong would I be looking at a complete rebuild or could it be some sort of sensor or something that is junk???? whats a 700R-4 cost to rebuild

got to watch those frames.

behind cab were the cab mount/box mount welds to frame rust out bad.

and front boxed section of frame rails were bumper goes rust out bad from lack of drainage holes.

if me i would get a crate tranny from local parts store for full warrenty . thay come with tranny/convortor/can of flush for cooler lines.
 
headed to look at it later today anything else I should look for?
I got a quote of 600 for rebuiling the transmission if I remove it myself is this something I can do I have removed lots of manual trannys from semis and pickups but never an auto
 
trans removal is easy, especially on a truck. theres definatly more than one way to do it.

1. pull engine and trans out through the hood together. seperate trans from engine on floor, get trans rebuilt, and reverse process. to put back in. the driveshaft will unbolt from the rear axle yoke, and then slide out of the output shaft of the transmission or transfer case.

2. remove driveshafts after chocking the wheels, and setting the parking brake. rig some method of supporting the engine, method used by dealerships is a metal cross bar that sets down on the shock towers, and then a chain connects the engine to this cross bar. unbolt trans/tcase and lower from under the vehicle.

youll need a cherry picker for sure, and maybe a trans jack. those are the two methods im familiar with.

the nice thing about paying someone to rebuild it, is that you can spend a little extra money in certain places on these transmissions to make them alot stronger. heavy duty sun shells, 5 pinion planitary gears, heavy duty clutch packs, upgraded shift kits, etc. etc.
 
If its only $150 more to have them do it, by all means have them do it.

Im guessing the thing probably hasnt ever been out before, and you have to deal with all the rusted **** underneath, cutting exhaust to get the tranny down because the manifold studs are rusted beyond use.

And pulling transmissions while on your back is miserable, I had a truck like that and replaced somehting like 5 700r4s while I had the thing. A trans jack will make it go FAR easier too.
 
In my opinion, it's always worth it to pay someone $150 to pull a tranny if you have not done it before and don't have all the tools. What should be a "simple" job always ended up taking all day for me because I wouldn't have some tool or part, or would accidentally break something, and it just was more headache that it was worth.

And without a tranny jack I wouldn't even bother unless you can easily bench 300 pounds. Trying to wrestle that thing back in is the worst part, I never can seem to get it lined up correctly and it takes a ton of effort. Then again, I only weigh 170 pounds, so I'm a weakling!
 
I would at least drop it yourself. It's not terribly difficult.

Tow it in later and have em stab it in if you're worried ab re-installation. May also give you more peace of mind to have a pro shop set the TV cable on a brand new 700r4.
 
This pickup is looking like its gonna be more money than its worth does anyone else think by the looks of the ad if its worth putting the money into

Just go look at it and take notes of everything wrong in it and the shake your head and say: it's only worth $300 or $400 to you and offer him that in cash, if he takes it you won't be losing.
Don't give him $600 for that truck.
 
That's a $300 truck if I ever saw one, needs a bunch of work. and won't be long for this world without said work.
 
Yeah good point on askin if the truck was worth puttin money into....Ha

A few things came up yesterday and I didnt get a chance to go look at it but I might of came across a way better deal a 76 Blazer been stored inside since 87 and not driven used to be regularly started until 94 or so so its been sittin 350 4 speed man. all original could use rockers but looks pretty clean can only see the one side cause its pushed up against a wall he only wants 500 for it

might still go see if the guy will take 300 for the pickup though
 
Another question I have a 75 blazer too I found bedsides for a long box on craigslist the bottom portion and my wheel archs are gone on the 75 could I cut those down and use them instead of a bunch of patch panels
