Need better rock protection, front quarter area. Give me your ideas please

[ QUOTE ]
I wasn't kidding actually

[/ QUOTE ] I know, I should have been more specific, I was refering to our good friends Russ, Marv, and Grim......

Seriously though, Once the MTRs are worn out, 38.5x14.5 SXs are going on, but since they're fairly new, I'm going to keep running them. Tube steel will be a good cheap fix for right now.

The current tube on the sliders is 1.5 x .120, I'm thinking of cutting off the main tubes and going to 2x2x .250, then somehow getting some tube up higher up the fender area, to be able to slide off the rocks, and not get wedged. Most of the problem I've had is slipping off some sort of V-notch, and the rocks wedge me right in between the wheel well opening and the tire /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

it does look like the weld-in style rocker boxes would have helped a lot.

You're right, and that's another idea I'm considering. Thanks for the input.

Grant, you've fallen into the snare of Darth Truggy /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

And just in case you want a Toyota Exo Cage Look-a-like Tube Farm:

hows that? the light blue is outside the fender, the green connects the light blue to the red that is behind the fender, the blue blue is a solid piece of steel welded between the light blue and red, and the yellow is just another reinforcement... hows that?

Looks like a beefier nerf bar is a good first step. I'm pretty happy with 1 7/8" x .188 DOM, much better than any .120 wall. Kick it into the frame above the shackle somewhere maybe?

I'm with stephen more beef. maybe cut out your rockers like 4x4 iron and relpace the bottom portion of the front fender and rear quarter panel with some 3 x 3. i have a steel connection in glendale az.

This looks pretty good... but what about your doors? I know MI trees REALLY like doors. And the rocker protection does nothing for the doors and windshield.

my current idea for mine

I have tube doors so doors don't matter to me, as for the windshield, I am getting a spare windshield frame because I know I will roll one day, as for you just take it easy or tie an exo cage into a roll cage /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

nice job on the cage .. can you still get the front fenders off without undoing/cutting the cage....
and what about body/frame flex... does it break the cage in stress points???

On a more serious note, I don't know about tying to the frame, but you could do what I'm doing to my son's K5. The rocker tube runs under the front fender to the cut back of the fender opening. The tube is tied to the reinforced body supports. The rocker tube has a piece of angle on the top so that the bottom of the fender can be welded/bolted to that (since the dog leg bolts are gone). Then, the fender lip (where you flares are) will be replaced with 1.75" roll bar tube bent to follow the new fender opening outline.

That's what I did in the rear wells (originally to handle rust). it's pretty strong:

skigirl,
What size of tubing is that? Looks good /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif

How is it that this thread is almost exactly one year old now? I doubt that Fred is real interested in armor anymore (he better not be after driving up on my only clean fender /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif <- then again I did use a 4 letter word on the CB... "jeep")

PS (In case anybody wonders I could care less about the sheetmetal as long as the doors will open)

Re: Need better rock protection, front quarter area. Give me your ideas pl

1 ½” x .120 - same as the outside tube on the sliders (4x4 iron made the sliders).

Okay thanks /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Still have to agree with the drivers driving habits issue....big rocks tend to make a K5 change into a buggy over time...its just gonna happen...and yes i'm sure Marv and Rob have something to do with it.... /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif. I still remember you getting thru lower terminator with just a slight scratch back in the day...

Yep, I agree. If you want to rock crawl a K5 hard then be ready for body damage even with the best amount of armor and good driving habits. I had been on the clean body band wagon but now that I have wheeled with the heavy hitters here in AZ I want to wheel harder myself and I have decided that trying to keep a clean body is futile even with armor.

If you want to rock crawl your truck will just get more beat up and more beat until you start cutting panels off, narrowing, or just plain not caring.

Fred has alot of tube armor on his truck to combat body damage and it didn't work. It got beat up anyway until he gave up on it.
