What do you mean by "trouble". Depending on ratio it will not come out with the ring gear on. I do not that with 4.10's I was able to get my roll pin out with the carrier in the dif.

Elaborate on what you mean by "trouble" and maybe we can help.

Don't know how I can break it down any easier for you.The cross shaft(which holds the spider gears in a open diff)is held in the carrier by a tension pin, which I am having trouble driving out so I can remove the cross shaft(which in a 4.10 geared diff will come out without removing the ring gear). The pin is definitely not wanting to come out.Anyone have any ideas?I have tried from both sides of the carrier, tried a little heat, tried tapping the shaft a bit from both ends to alleviate any bind.????

I know what pin you are talking about but saying "your having trouble" is abit vague at best. You said you tried to drive it both ways so I am not sure. I does only come out 1 direction. It might have some gunk or varnish on it locking it into place.

Hit that bitch like it owes you money it might just be stuck and needs a little persuasion.

I got it out finally. The @#$%&* thing had split lengthwise andmy punch would push one piece and then wedge against the other. What a PITA!!!And it's not a standard size pin, either. It's right in between a 3/16 and a 1/4 inch.I wanted to get the right replacement so I called the Chevy dealership,as well as a few parts stores,to find out that that piece,#49 on the exploded view shown on The Dana 60 Bible,is discontinued.I guess we should all drag our rigs down to the wrecking yard since they are obsolete!!I can't believe that crap.So I shaved a pin down to a size that gave me a good fit.Now I'm Lock-Righted up front.Sweet!Going riding Sunday!
BTW,does anyone know where I can get one or two of those pins?

It is a roll pin it should be split length wise. The pin is slightly larger than the hole and as you press the pin in the gap will closeup and make a tight fit in the hole.

It is like a spring that is round and long.

That is if i am understanding the split you are talking about.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The pin had broken in two.In a big curve opposite the split. One side was pushed farther than the other so it was wedging my punch against the bore.Anyway,I used a 1/4" pin and shaved it slightly so it would press fit.

I think you need to settle down a bit when you're asking for help. We have no idea what your knowledge is when it comes to working on trucks. There is no need for giving an attitude when someone is trying to explain something to you or understand what you're having "trouble" with. :deal:

I'm not trying to come across as an ass just trying to help you.

My bad.Looking back at the posts,I thought it was pretty clear. The pin was broken in two, like I said.If I didn't know what a tension pin was I wouldn't have called it by it's proper name in the very first post.Next time I'll just say "I'm hitting it and it's not moving".Not trying to be an ass.Anyway,I got it out,had a great day wheeling today with a great group of off-roaders.I hope you did too.-Allen
