Hey guys, I'm in need of some info & I know I'm in the right place. I have just got ahold of another K5, complete with a sticking auto hub setup. I am going to install an extra set of 3/4T Suburban front & rear ends I have laying around but won't be doing that for a few months. In the mean time I wanted to take the stock manual locking hubs off my 3/4T 10bolt frontend and put them on the 1/2T 10bolt in place of the autojunk. Is this possible? I can't buy any warns at this time(no$$$), so thats out of the question.

So, do-able?

Thanks- John

Yep should just be a remove and replace type deal. :D Small snap ring on the stub shaft and a big snap ring around the hub body.

Easy swap...don't forget to clean all the parts really good and only give them a very light coating of grease. Too much grease and they'll stick.

Awesome! Thats what I was hoping to hear. I'll tackle it tommorow then, thanks a million!

Merry Christmas eveyone!!!

Thanks again- John

Well, I tried this out and I must be missing something. The manual selector hub body will not slide into the wheel hub quite far enough to install the large snap ring that holds it in place. I tried using a prybar to be sure the axle was pushed back in the carrier as far as it could go, still not far enough.

Now here are the only differences I've been able to see between the 3/4T 10 bolt & 1/2T 10 bolt.

The 3/4T's axle shaft snap ring was near the end of the axle, in an extra ring land that dosn't exist on the 1/2T. I had to remove this to get the hub body out. On the 1/2T the axle shaft snap ring is behind the hub body, near the bearing.

Unfortunatly I can't get any pic's so I hope I've been able to describe it good enough. It needs to go back about 3/4 the width of the large snap ring to allow it to fall into place.

WHAT THE HECK AM I MISSING?

Thanks- John

EDIT: I was looking around here & found this http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168847
In here it is mentioned, "if you have the axle shaft out far enough that you can get the snap ring on....". So does this mean that I can remove the axleshaft snap ring completely and rely on the large snap ring to keep everything together?

EDIT AGAIN: Ok, I kept looking around here & found a thread where a fellow had trouhble like me. I need to remove the axle shaft snap ring & washer thats near the bearing & then the hub should go. Then concentrate on trying to get the axle shaft snap on in it's outer location.

You found your answers. The axle shaft can move in and out a little. If it gets pushed in to the carrier the fraction of an inch, you can't get the snap ring back on. The axle doesn't come out through the hub/gear far enough.

OK guys, looking for some verification....

I took off the axle shaft snap ring and washer that was inside, close to the wheel bearing, and everything went on fine. BUT... there is not a ring land for the snap ring out towards the end of the axle, so NO axle shaft snap ring. Is this OK? Will the big outer snap ring be enough? Sorry to sound like a noob, but I kinda am a noob on some things and like to be "safe than sorry". Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Reach back behind the spindle, feel the U joint and and push out on the axle shaft. The grove for the snap ring should magically appear.

had the same exact problem on my 83 k5..could not get the axle to protrude far enough to get the small snap ring on the axle groove when i installed my warn hubs........fought with it for hours...then read the instructions for the warn hubs and it said the axle snap ring is not required as long as the large ring is installed on the outer edge to hold the hub in place .......never had a problem with mine if thats any help..........i'm sure i will be corrected if my info is wrong

I did try to push the axle out farther, only got a tiny bit of movement. Where the axle snap ring was on the 3/4t frontend was an extra ring land. The 3/4t had a total of three ring lands, one inside by the bearing, one a couple inches from the end of the axle shaft, and one near the end of the axle. The K5's 1/2t frontend is missing the outermost ring land completely and the next one in is about an inch or so too deep to install the snap ring. I really appreciate all the input fellas, thanks again. I think I'll go with the Warn info that carolinafan4life63 posted and hope that nuthin' falls off!

Thanks again!
