I broke something in the transmission, I think:doah:. 2004 Yukon Denali xl 133k. We were on our way out for my twin sons birthday dinner. I had my wife, 3 sons and my mom in the truck. I took off from a light and got on it to go around a slower car. When it shifted into 2nd it made a pop sound and acted like it went into neutral. I let off the gas and I assume that it put it self into 3rd because it acted normal except now I do not have overdrive. All the rest of the way to the restaurant it would slip going into second. When we got back into the truck to leave from dinner is when I found out that we didn't have reverse. So in the rain in front of applebees I had to push this f*#@er out of a parking spot.

So how screwed am I? Oh and to make things worse.... My damn warranty expired less than 400 miles ago.

Does anybody know what model tranny is even in this thing?

Thank you.

I dont know what's worse ... the trans falling apart or the warranty just expiring. Look on the bright side... at least you didn't go to applebees alone.

I'm sure it's at least similar to the 4l60e...2 and 4 are run by the same servo pin pushing on a band to clamp around a drum...you probably broke that band. Don't remember if reverse is run with that clamped or not...I remember with 4l60s, when upgrading that servo (hydraulic piston) to one with larger surface area, sometimes that pin will hit the flat on the band so hard it can damage it. I suppose the same thing could happen if it through way too much pressure to the stock servo, same thing could occur.

It's common for the sunshell to explode on that year 4l60, it happens VERY often on trailblazers for some reason. Usually on those, you put it in reverse in your driveway and it pops. 2002-2004 it was an issue, iirc. If you pull it yourself, you could probably have it done for 5-800 bucks.

have a dodge magnum with a hemi that blew at 60,300 miles, warranty was only for 60k. they still covered it and i got a new motor with a 100k warranty on it. i say bring it to the dealer and at least try

I think it is a 4L65e if it matters. The factory warranty is up. I had an extended warranty on it. All the dealers that I have talked to said that if the factory warranty was still in affect then they would be able to get it fixed to me but, since the factory warranty was up and my extened warranty is over there is nothing that they could do for me.

Sounds like the sun shell is striped no matter what happens with the warranty stuff your gonna need a rebuild sucks man!

That sucks. Would a 4L80 bolt up and work fine? I can pick up a 6.0 with 4L80 for cheap. I think it's from a 2 wheel drive.

The band in the 4l60/700r4s is applied in 2nd, OD, and reverse. I would expect it to be the same in the 4l65E

I would think it would be something with either the band failing somehow, or like others have said, the sunshell, which has been an epic failure of a part since the 700R4 came out in 82.

The 4L80 is longer, IMO not worth the extra it will take to lengthen and shorten shafts.

Just a heads up, with around your mileage the rear main seals can leak. Id recommend the cover seal and rear main while out.

Is there a certain rebuild kit that you would recommend? What about any worth while mods to make it stronger? This is our main family vehicle and trailer puller for the toys.
Thanks for the help.

I think the upgrage for these are about endless

Definitly a HD sunshell, higher quality band is a big one...

It really depends on usage, I dont see you needing to go crazy for a stock DD that sometimes pulls a trailer.

I think that HD sunshell is call "the beast". They're only like $30-$60 if I remember correctly.

I highly recommend upgraded 2nd servo, along with the OD servo if you plan on towing at all. The best ones that I've seen are the TCI billet aluminum ones. They give you the most surface area you're going to get out of that bore. You can also put more frictions in one or two of the clutches just like with other Turbos...I think the 3rd gear clutch is the big one you wanna upgrade to I think 6 frictions...I have the TCI servos in my DD and I *should* have a beast shell and 5 or 6 frictions in my 3rd gear clutch, but I had a shop do it since both my rigs were down and I needed it fast.

Probably just upgrade all the wear items like frictions, wider bushings when you can (you might be able to double up on the sun gear bushings like in 350s. I haven't spent a lot of time working on the 700s/4l60s but they aren't all that different from 350s.

Have you considered doing this yourself? If you have the time, you can save yourself a buttload of money and learn a lot in the process. This forum is borderline more knowledgeable and absolutely more helpful than any dealership. Autos are really not the demon seed that they're cracked up to be when it comes to working on them.

I've thought about doing it myself but, this is one thing that I've never done before. I'm sure I can take it out myself and put it back in.

I am lucky in the fact that we have other cars to drive so I do not need a rental car. Rebuilding with one of those monster kits looks like a decent deal. Thanks for the link.
