So just recently had a wired grinding sound that's off and on but today was much worse one of the guys said it sounds like a starter gear going my truck is a 83 k5 with 400small block and 700 turbo tranny any ideas

I take it it happens when your trying to start it and is sorta high pitched?

if it has to do with the starter it shouldnt do it while running. rules out the starter gears. Im not sure at all then:dunno: maybe an accessory going bad:thinking:

Loose fan belt?
Accessory pulley on the way out?

I've had belts in the past that were much more prone to making noise at idle, and they would quiet down as soon as you gave it a little gas.

I don't really know what a "wired grinding sound" is, so sorry if I'm not much help.

first thought is starer hanging up,but details I think will help.

could still be the starter if the bendix is stuck out, but it won't last long like this.

If the grinding matches engine rpm vs, say, wheel speed, then I would agree with the others and check belts or possibly an accessory bearing going out - i.e. idler/alternator/a/c

again, more details would help.

Yea I'm pretty sure it's the starter gear cuz after work I went to start it and I could hear the starter spin but not catch real loud screech It finally caught and started but I'm leaving it parked till I know for sure

Should I fork out the cash for a new starter or just the gear and any recon recommendations on high quality I'd rather get top quality thx guys

Just get a new starter. They're cheap enough, not worth the trouble to rebuild one yourself, unless you just really enjoy that stuff, then by all means.

You should be able to get a reman starter from any auto parts store for a little cheaper than a new one- the new one will probably last longer, but both will have a lifetime warranty. There's nothing inherently wrong with a reman starter, that's what I put on mine when it went out last year.

To me, there's no point in spending a whole lot of cash on a starter- it has one job to do, when it fails it isn't likely to damage anything else, you usually have some warning before they die altogether, and they're quick and easy to replace, so I'll save my money there and spend it elsewhere on the truck. But if it buys you a bit more peace of mind and that's worth it to you, go ahead and get a new one.

Mine does this WITH a brand new starter so...... :dunno: Ive checked the flex plate teeth and all. still does it periodicaly. tried shims, didnt help.:doah:

When mine started doing that it was because the gear wasn't extending. It would spin, but because it wasn't extending it wouldn't catch on the flex plate. I actually was being really cheap, and took off the starter and sprayed some electric parts cleaner in, and then some grease (white lithium? I don't remember). Worked fine for a year before it started doing it again, at which point I went ahead and replaced it. I'm not necessarily recommending that method, but I'd probably spray some grease in there if I had a new one that wasn't catching. Either that or take it back for a replacement if it's got a warranty.
