I posted in the General Forums in the Garage about having some issues and ryoken stepped up big! :waytogo:

I'm rebuilding the driver's side front hub with new bearings/seals as mine went nuclear on me driving on the highway yesterday. When I pulled it apart the pressure spring that holds the inner clutch ring in place came out in pieces as well as bearings......

I've got all the bearings/races and a new seal and the manual hub is still in working condition......but I'm missing the pressure spring now.

Can I drive this without the pressure spring to get down to a parts store or will this cause new damage?

I'm assuming this drawing is similar to what my 87 looks like internally.....

anyone have the correct drawing so I know exactly what I'm missing?

You are just talking about the manual locking hub right? I drove my 1st k20 for 1 month without it before I knew that it was missing as the previous owner must have somehow left it out. I would just leave the whole locking hub out and stuff somehthing in there or tape something around it to keep the muck out. Then go buy a new set of manual locking hubs. It is good to have a spare in the truck anyways.

if you look at the drawing I posted, I'm talking about running it without any of the parts #10-#14.

#10 is the clip that goes onto the axle shaft itself....holding #11(axle shaft sleeve/ring) into place which in turn locks into #12(inner clutch ring) that when engaged by the manual locking hub causes #11 to slide into #12 which engages the axle shaft to lock to the hub/wheel. #13 is what is missing and if there is a #14 on the 87 model then there isn't any pressure to hold #12 in place.

My issue is, can I run with the hub/wheel with the new bearings installed and the spindle nuts/washer torqued in place without anything else from the manual locking hub inward to parts #13/14 since the pressure spring(#13) is missing? Will this cause the axle to wobble inside of the spindle since it's not being held into place by parts #10-#14?

I think I just answered my own question..........I'm SOL dealing with this 20degree weather and 4 inches of snow now anyways so I'm going to have to wait until I get the pressure spring and some warmer weather tomorrow.

The hub body turns on the wheel bearings. as long as it is not in 4 wheel drive the axle shaft will not be spinning anyways and I would think that the spindle bearing would keep the end of the axle shaft from moving around much so I wouldn't think it would hurt anything. I wouldn't drive it indefinitely but it should be fine for a quick trip or two. Also, I would be surprised if you can just buy the pressure spring. Just buy a set of locking hubs or 1 if you can find it and swap it out. It should only take 15 minutes

I don't believe a new set of locking hubs comes with the parts I'm missing. The locking hubs are really just the outer part that bolts up to part #10-14 :dunno:

I had a set of spicers explode on my 60 and the mile markers I bought (only kind available on island) had all of the new parts inside. In fact, parts 10 and 11 were what grenaded on me. You may want to call ahead to the parts store to double check, but I'm pretty sure this is the case.

The same is true for both styles of warns. If everything is out of the hub body. You just take the cover off the locking hub, slide the locking hub on, install the large snap ring that holds the locking hub in, install the snapring on the axle stub, and re-install the locking hub cover. Super easy, literally 15 minutes even for me, and I can make anything take forever.

Thanks for all of your help guys.......hope you didn't take it personal when I questioned what you said!

Not at all. Glad you've got what you need on the way and hopefully you're on the road again by mid-day Saturday:waytogo:
