I have been trying to look up the codes for the truck color but can't seem to figure it out.
If anyone can help me on this?

Also, that's the roof. Big cracks, feels like fiberglass. Water is a concern so I think bondo to seal it up?

If I can find the color go around the rest of the truck and hit the small chips that are starting to show rust.

So that's my plan. Please tell me how/why I am doing it wrong and what I should actually be doing lol. As far as it is now this is all my brain can come up with.

What vehicle is this? You have a build thread for an '80 but the VIN in these pics is for a newer truck, got any pics of the whole truck?

And the Vin on the label in these pictures is from a newer truck? I got it from inside the glove box. It looks like it belongs but I can't say for sure.

I'll have to see if I can find and look up the Vin from there and other places I can find it.

Sorry, I was wrong. I thought the 17 character VIN started in 1981 but when I Googled the formats I found the change took effect January 1980 which is actually the middle of the 1980 model year. Sooo... a 1980 model truck built before Jan 1 1980 will have a 13 character VIN (like my old '80 K10) then any trucks built 01/1980+ will have a 17 character VIN.

The half cab or roof over the front seats should be metal so that cracking is pretty strange. Could it be a THICK bondo or fiberglass repair? Can you see the inside of the roof panel or do you have a headliner?

Ya, I know when I went to town it was a bit of an issue, the Vin being a strange amount of numbers.

I do have a headliner but had already started to take it off. I stopped because the top of sorta stuck on, can peel it off but want to make sure I can find some stuff to get it back on with. So it's not all lose and hanging.

It seems, from what I can see now that it's metal on the inside so like you said. A repair was more than likely done. However this truck is outside for now and thunderstorms coming in tonight. A tarp will habe to do for now but would like to seal it up so I don't run into issues. Worried about mold more than anything.

u7349 is the color code. Listed as "dark blue".

The top needs to be ground back to bare material to see what is wrong. Looks like a really bad repair on a once crushed roof. It should not leak internally unless it was punctured. The cracking and lifting you see is probably from moisture getting under the repair and freezing.

Sure looks like a big dent in the roof was filled in with 1/2" of bondo. I don't think adding more would be a good option. Definetly a tarp until you figure out what you have going on.

Okay, that makes sense, the water freezing. So got the tarp fully on and no water will be getting in. Well, just one think more to get to make nicer

I'll pull off the headliner off and see how from inside it looks.

Do you think it will be too hard to put the fabric back up, as long as I take it off good. I have never taken off parts like that.

If I remember right, the roof is 2 panel. Inside sheet metal may not show anything. I could be wrong, and someone whose brain is not broke will chime in.

The roof is double wall.

I'm pretty sure the cosmetic headliner material is glued to a formed board which is held in place by the perimeter trim.

You are correct on that. Between the 2 of us, we might know something.
Okay, the information is great. Stop me from heading down a worthless path.

My concern at this point would be rust starting inside the double wall. If there is a place for it to get in.

From what I can tell I may need to grind off all the whatever is on top, see if there are any spaces for water to have gotten in. If not just build the roof back up.

Grinding it down makes me a tad uneasy. Never done that before on a car. But I'm sure it's not all that hard, if care is taken.

Who knows, maybe someday I'll have half a brain to add to a post

By building up, you mean reapply bondo? May be worth getting a mobile dent puller guy to come take a look at it.

60 grit flap wheel on an angle grinder would get through that quickly.

Overall plans for paint on your truck?

I truly am not sure but if there is such a thing as a mobile dent service I will look into that. Thank you for that tip.

Okay, 60 grit on a grinder. Perfect I have a reason to get an angle grinder now.

The overall plan will be to have it professionally painted. I'm thinking a gray or a grayish blue. I'm also trying to figure out what I would want the interior to be.

Until then, I'm going to try and clean up the few spots that have chips out. Try and better my skills at painting and buffing it out. I have seen some guides and it looks like I can handle it.

Either way, that top needs to be taken care of. For this week however it has its appointment with a mechanic to go over the whole truck. Fingers cross he tells me it's a super rare k5 and it's priceless....

Home hobbyist here, but FWIW consumables will nickle and dime you to death. I've had good luck with benchmark abrasives for cutting discs and flap wheels.

Sounds like a solid plan.
