My rig was rearended and totalled.
Guys insurance co is trying to give me $3000 for it.

According to their research there is only 2 vehicles for sale in the US that are comparable....

Well I know we can do better.

Please post links to built 1979 Chevy GMC trucks for sale in your area.
Thanks for the help.

Its a shortbed.
3 link front and 4 link rear. One tons and 40 inch tires.
So finding a similar rig is gonna be tough.

Check eBay. Search for the truck, and then click the "Completed sales" link.

I've been through this "kind of". You need to find the same year/make/model in YOUR area then you'll have to add or subtract differences since your rig is custom. The problem you're going to have is that most insurance companies DO NOT cover add-ons unless you have them stated in your policy prior to any claim. Finding a vehicle similiar in a different area or state usually won't work either as the market is different in every area for a like vehicle. What you need to ask is do you get the 3K and get to keep your rig? If so then I would probably say to take the money and run then find another rig to swap all your stuff onto.

That really only applies if he was at fault, since someone hit him it's up to that insurance company to replace what was damaged/lost.

Now, the bad news there is that the work was done by Odin. That means it's up to him to prove that it was worth, in any way, more than a stock '79 truck. No offense to Odin because I think he did a fine job of work on the truck but they could argue it's worth less with the modifications, it could be argued that the truck is less valuable because the suspensions perform worse in certain situations (even if they really don't).

I really don't think you're going to find anything close enough to convince an insurance company to give you more money, IMO your best bet is to provide receipts for parts and give them a stupid high number for cost of labor and hope they throw back a counter offer that is close to what you want.

I am by no means an expert with insurance but from my experience that's the approach I would take.

I wish that were true in California but it isn't. An insurance company is only going to pay UP TO fair market value for damages if the vehicle is totaled UNLESS you can prove otherwise regardless of who is at fault. Insurance companies are no different than anyone else in that they're not going to pay more than they have to.

Thanks for all the input.
Jersey is like California in the way the claim gets paid.
They compare to similar vehicles in my area. Just spoke to them yesterday. They couldn't find any nearby, so they went national and only found 2 79 chevy K10s and came up with that number.
My plan is to take the parts from Odin (my short bed) and use them in my 89 3+3 and build a short crew cab.

I was hit several years ago in a car i had done alot of rebuilding and new parts replacement on, the insurance company only wanted to give fair market value on the car, unless,,,,i showed then the receipts to all the new mods and parts i did to the vehicle. I did, and they bumped it up quite a bit then i bought it back for something like $175.

you'll probably have to show receipts for all the add-ons you did to it to make a point to them that this isn't an ordinary regular everyday type truck.

I just spoke to the insurance adjuster and Im doing just that.
She suggested I dig up some receipts and forward them to her.
I'll keep you guys posted.
