Like the title says. I have a 1988 suburban dash harness and am confused about which is for the fuel level. I was able to identify everything else I needed: high beams, dimmer, signals, brake light, and 4x4 lights, etc .I have the non tach model, and what I thought to be the fuel, is reading 0ohms. Any help with reading the correct schematic would be appreciated. I tossed the cluster on Friday or I would just trace the cluster.

I guess I could be pretty low on gas, but assumed it would not be straight 0 ohms.

You know...I'm sitting back inside, and wondering why I didn't check the resistance on the rest of the wires left in the plug. Not sure why I didn't think of that while I still had the garage open .

If no one else chimes in with the correct answer, what you could do is disconnect the sending unit plug next to the tank and measure the resistance of the sending unit (purple wire). Then reconnect it and probe around until you find the connection that matches (or darn close to it). Then with the ohmmeter still connected, disconnect the sending unit to verify (should have a reading of infinity, or error depending on your meter).

Is there not a 3rd pink wire? I ran into this yesterday on the 89.

I had 3, 2 on 1 connector then a 3rd, and the Haynes diagram said it should be just a single pink wire. When I checked continuity they all gave a reading, so I was confused as hell. Once I unpinned I realized they were all connected together. :doah:

Don't use Haynes. The link in my signature has the GM ones. Haynes is utter rubbish when it comes to wiring. Well, everything, but they are better than nothing, if nothing is all you have access to.

^^^^That's what I used. I added some fuel and still no change. I'll do some more digging this afternoon. All my connections are soldered, so shouldn't have a continuity issue. It was working when I pulled the cluster, so something screwy is going on.

Haha. I’m an idiot. It was late and I wasn’t thinking.

Today I thought more about what I posted first. The Dakota gauges were seeing a 0 ohm resistance during a self test and I was assuming that I had the wrong wires. I didn’t consider that it was shorted to ground. I pulled the control box out and swapped the + and - and voila. All is good. I’ll get some pictures of the install up in my build thread.

I used all one color wire to extend what I needed. Everything was zip tied and taped to be clean when I relaized there was a problem.

For the record

Pink wire, there’s three in two different pins. pin 18 has the double and it works just fine.
