Need help on potention m1009 buy

Well I own a 1990 k5 Jimmy and it finally died on me. The whole rearend broke the other week and found out the whole thing is shot. My mechanic told me it would cost 1400 to get it back up and running. Also the k5 was soooo rusty fron floors rusting away to the wheel wells rusting to pieces. It is time to put her to rest. Now I am looking at another one. This one is a m1009 version. I always liked the military version and always wanted one. My question is first do you think they are good daily drivers? Would cost like $100 to find a half ton axle on Craigslist.
 
Looks like a good buy. They are fine for daily drivers, although they will lack some of the creature comforts of civilian models, such as A/C and power options. Unless it's been re-geared, it probably has 3.08 gears, with those 35s it'll be a bit pokey.

I agree with Deuling, axles for these trucks are cheap and plentiful. If you like the truck you have, a used axle should be easy to come by.
 
I don't see a rocker panel so potentially this truck has some rust problems too. Give it a good inspection inside and out. Also make sure the glow plugs work (very common problem)

The M1009 can make a decent daily driver if you add some interior and a stereo to it.

Well it is not just the axle that broke. A nut flew and cracked the yoke. Gears are all trashed from the bolt hitting them. Seals cracked from years in use so it not leaks a little fluid. Plus my k5 had over 240k miles on it. The two rear wheel wells were rusting away a ton. The frame had a little rust to it plus body mounts. The floors were rusting away and were poorly patched from previous owners. Basically it just time to call it for the old girl.

So to put over 600 for a whole new rear axle is not worth it. I would rather get that diesel version that is pretty good condition that would not need to much to keep her in the same condition.
 
Guys around my area are sell complete half ton sets out of these trucks for 150 dollars almost everyday. If you can do the work yourself or have a buddy help out would be a lot cheaper. I just picked up a set of 3/4 complete axle set with wheels and 35 inch tire which have seen better days for 300 the otherday yes the front is a heavy dana 44 but the 14 bolt ffis what I was really after and they are geared 4:10 . I am just saying look around before letting the old k5 go to the yard.
 
First off I do not need just axles I need the whole rearend from from drum to drum. If I could find something stronger then a 3/4 ton rearend and it was cheap then I would do it. Not sure if that is possible, but if someone can help let me know!
 
I think most people here are referring to a complete axle assembly, that you just roll under the truck and bolt in. I got a SF 14 bolt and 3/4 front with a lock rite for 150. If you want to jump on the CUCV go for it, just don't feel like you're out of cheap and easy options for your current rig. You're not the first one to grenade an axle assembly on an old truck.

On a side note, I'm about to do the axle swap on my K5 in a week or so, its just a 10 bolt with a 3.08 gear, but it works fine and if you don't mind a trip to Virginia you can have it.
 
I loved my CUCV, and if I had the money, I'd jump at the chance to get another. They leave the military with low miles. May be different up there in Jersey, but the CARC paint saves the body from rust. Won't have AC, power anything, radio, ACC position on the ignition... but who cares? They should have the windshield built in antenna, love those things.

6.2 with the 3.08 makes good mpg, won't haul ass, but you still have decent crawl in 4low.

Those 35 will kill you though. If its not lifted, go back to at least 33s, I had 33s from a parts truck, put them on, and went back to the 31s.

Bit over priced, but its all about region. If that's what they go for there.
 
It looks Ike a hell of a deal to me. It has rebuilt 400 trans I think it said. It won't be a fast truck but it will get the job done. Looks good from the few pics I see. The military trucks usually have low mileage but have say around idling most its life. If he had all the paperwork like he said it seems to be a deal. Hard to find in decent condition in our area anymore. I've gotten full axles for 100-200 bucks or whole vehicles to part out for 3-500 as well. Just gota look. Call up a few yards and see what's available. I usually use collis truck parts. Not sure how close you are but the guys there know trucks.

They are not talking about axles shafts, they are talking about complete axles. I haul 1/2 ton axles to iron, because they are worthless. You should be able to have your current Blazer back on the road in a day for a couple hundred dollars.
