I just bought a np205 to th350 adaptor for my sub (I had a 208) well I opened the box and noticed that there is some kind of rubber "seal" on both sides of the adaptor where the coupler passes through (like they are to seal tight up against the coupler). The one on the tcase side is screwed up pretty bad, the coupler will still fit through the mess but if the purpose of these rubber rings is to be some kind of seal well it is screwed. Now i tried to remove the one but it doesn't want to come out, like it is embeded in the adaptor and it started ripping so I left it alone. What should I do?? What is the purpose of these rings?? Any help would be great, thanks

the purpose is to keep tranny fluid in the tranny and out of the Tcase, and visa-versa ,
notice the direction of the seals and replace them correctly, you will drive one out one direction and then drive the other out the other direction.

just a note, you had a 208 , did you change trannies also ? the tranny will take a shorter output shaft on the 205 thans the 208 .

thanks for the reply so the seals are made to be replaced if need be??? is this something I can get at NAPA??? and yeah I am surching for a th350 that will work right now also

You can also get a spacer so you dont have to change output shafts. search for 205/700 swap and you shall find your answer. Can't help you on the seals, but you could try a local auto parts place.

Griffin, just knock the seals out and take em to the parts store. They can get the # off of them and cross them over to something that is the same. Might take a little lookin but they are available.

There is also an oring in there somewhere. I am looking into this now. Just wanted you to know there is more than just the two seals.

On a search of NP205 seals I found this post....

There are actually four seals between the TH350 and NP205:
1. O-ring on the 205 input shaft
2. Double lip seal between the adapter and drive sleeve
3. O-ring between adapter and TH350 case
4. Gasket between adapter and 205--this needs to be used because the adapter has machined reliefs which dictate spacing to locate the 205 bearing and snapring

As has been said, there are two different styles of TH350/NP205 adapter, the difference being one has a support bearing for the drive sleeve, but the later models did not have this feature. However, the number of gaskets and seals does not change.

thanks for all the help but now i have another question (O-ring on the tcase input shaft ???) i understand now that gaskets go on both sides of the adaptor between the tranny and tcase and that there are seals that insert into the adaptor that seal around the coupling but i don't follow the O-ring on the shaft and when you say "O-ring" between adaptor and th350 case could that mean gasket

I don't have mine apart yet and this is why I have been searching and following this thread. I believe there are 2 seals one that keeps the the transmission fluid out of the TC and one that keeps TC fluid out of the transmission, these seal the around the coupling to the adapter. It is my understanding that there is an oring (not a gasket) that seals from the transmission to the adapter. There is a gasket that seals the adapter to the transfer case. I also understand there is an oring that goes between the input shaft and coupling to prevent fluid from leaking past the splines between the coupler and transfer case input splines.

This is what I have been able to find out from reading lots of posts and doing lots of searches. I have a thread myself looking for the correct seals, orings, and gaskets so I can stop mine from leaking from the TC to the transmission. I don't want to muscle the heavy TC and adapter only to have it still leak. I am a firm believer in doing things right the first time. I would apreciate anyone with actual hands on experience to chime in.

well i still dont follow you on the O-ring i don't see how it goes between the input shaft and coupling ?? but i do get that its an O-ring instead of gasket ......... so from the trans to the tcase it goes 1. O-ring between trans and adaptor 2.seal in adaptor for around coupling 3. second seal in adaptor for around coupling 4. then gasket between adaptor and tcase the O-ring you are talking about for the input shaft does it go in the coupling or does it slide down over the shaft, outside of the coupling ???? and i think the seals for in the adaptor can be had at drivetrain.com (item# 201052) but i am not 100% sure because they don't have any pics and are you saying you have this setup? if so do you plan on taking yours apart anytime soon cause then you could answer all these questions

and lastly are there any fluids made that can be used both in an auto tranny and tcase then it would not matter if the fluids travel from one to the other

OK maybe this will clear up some confusion.

This is the o-ring that is around the input they are refering to.

The other o-ring looks like this.

And goes around this flange on the trans sdie of the adapter.

The Case side of the adapter will have a gasket like this(not my pic, could'nt find one in the shop)

And yeah I know thats not a 205 adapter. It was the closest thing I had handy to take pics of.:D

oooooooooooooooooo i see now THANKS for the pics BIG help

hey i sent you an email about a trans i am looking for did you get that (just email me since i see you know who i am)

and lastly are there any fluids made that can be used both in an auto tranny and tcase then it would not matter if the fluids travel from one to the other

That is not a simple yes or no answer. There are some that run transmission fluid in both due to the "leak". Problem being it does not just leak back and forth. The transmission over time fills the tranfer case to capacity. This can cuase the other seals to fail, the transmision can become dammaged due to a low fluid condition......... I am just trying to do this right once (and maybe help you in the process). The cost of the few gaskets, seals, and orings are inexpensive compared to having to do the job more than once?

I bought my truck over a year ago. The previous owner did many things wrong and I am not sure anything I take apart should be considered correct for reinstallation so I try to get as much info as I can.

Thanks for that picture!

If all else fails, you might call 4X Heaven in New York. They should have the gaskets available (?). When I converted my SM465 / 205 to a TH400 / 205 they had all the adapters and parts to do it right. They also advised me of the correct TH400 to obtain. If you have a good TH350 and they have the correct adapter coupling for your tranny it might be cheaper to purchase it than obtain another TH350.

thanks for the contact I will for sure check them out where are you in West By God always like seeing other mountaineers on here oh man its after 8 I need to go watch Obama ....................... hahahaha f that a

Oh no, so you wear the white and green, well thats okay I guess. Are there any offroad shops over that way ?? I am over in Charleston and there aren't any around here, I always have to order stuff on-line, it would be nice to find a shop to go to.
