hey guys.

i'm trying to leave for a camping trip and i'm swapping a 6.5 diesel starter into my 6.2. everything is hooked up and ready to go. when i hit the starter, the truck fires up but the starter doesn't dis-engage, and it just spins with the engine. is it possible that the re-manned 6.5 starter is messed up? any other thoughts/input??

thanks!!

Did you check for clearance between the starter teeth and the flywheel? (NOTE: Do NOT check this with the battery connected, as you can connect the power to the motor when you manually extend the starter gear). :yikes:

You can install shims between the starter and block to get the gap correct. You should be able to insert the end of a standard paper clip between a "point" of the starter gear and the mating "valley" of the flywheel when it's set right.

does the solenoid unbolt from the housing like a gas motors does? if so make sure the bolts are tight. I had one loosen up on my and there was no pressure to pull the starter gear back.

I put two shims in, still have the problem, how many shims can I use?
