Need help regarding a FORD!!

I've got a buddy who is looking at an 88 Ford Ranger 4x4, 2.9, 6 cyl. I don't know a thing about Fords (I told him to buy a GM, but ....). Can anyone tell us anything about this truck or point us towards a site where we can ask the same question.

My main concern is smog in California. I know you'd want to stay away from an 86 GM around here due to all the CA emmision and that the 87 and up FI motor would be a much better chioce. Is Ford like that al all?

The 88 2.9L were MPFId so you dont have to worry about goofy emission carb problems or fords junk TBI system. Rangers aren't bad little little trucks. They can be built and there is quite a bit of aftermarket stuff for them.
