I have an '87 K10 with a 350, 700R4 and I believe a NP208 TC. I am experiencing what seems to be slippage in the chain when in 2WD. I hear a grinding when driving then when the chain does catch, it feels as if I just got rear-ended! I have never ripped into one of these. Is rebuilding one of these a big project or is it something a weekend warrior could handle? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You're sure its the t-case and not the rear end?

If its the t-case find a used one and throw it in (they're a dime a dozen).

I am not 100% on the TC. It is the only thing I can think of that would react the way it is. It started last winter when I would pull it out of 4WD and go with 2. I would get a chugging type of reaction upon accelerating and it would go away once I got over 35mph. Then when i would slow to a stop, I would get the chugging again and the big bang at the stop. This afternoon it started doing it again only this time it hasn't been in 4WD right before.

First, welcome to CK5!

This symptom does sound similar to some other NP 208/241 failures I have heard of. 38377k5 is right, geting another 208 is probably the easiest, cheapest way to go.

Its an easy check to pull the rear diff cover and have a look and eliminate it as a possibility as well.

In answer to your original question, rebuilding a 208 is not hard and can be done by a weekend wrencher.

Pull the rear diff cover and make sure a bunch of parts/metal don't fall out. You might not notice a blown up rear end in 4WD.

If its not the rear end its the t-case.

Thanks for the help guys. Any recommendations on who to go to for a remfg. 208?

www.nationaldrivetrain.com They ship from Atl and Chi.

You can get bearing/seal kit, chain for about $200. If it's gotten bad enough to slip the chain, you may need a range fork. If you buy a used TC, you may be buying someone else's problem. Do it yourself and you know what you've got. I did my 241 in a couple hours at a leisurely non-pro mechanic pace, bench pressed it in and out. weighs about 80lbs. Quality snap ring pliers, wooden tap dowel, patience and a six pack.
