My retired neighbor has an older (80's) caddy with a flat tire. He bought it used, and didn't get the key for the locking hub caps. Can I use a hole saw to get them off?

I need to help him out, he's on a fixed income being a retired Marine.

Thanks in advance

Dont think for a second your going to drill that out. I've walked this road with my buddies car. Either get the keyed socket removal tool that the tool manufacturers make or the other option is to weld a piece of pipe over the lug and put a pipewrench on it.

Thanks

I was afraid of that.....:doah:

wheel lock-they make sockets just for this, rip sockets, available at home depot and so on, --if its just the hub cap with the locking center bolt your trying to get off then you can drill out the bolt head

I was thinking maybe taking a hole saw and cutting around the lock, through the hub cap. He's not worried about losing the locking ability....

Is the tire bad or just off the bead?

If the bead is unseated, you don't even need to take the tire off to reseat it. Lots of ways to fix that.

Any tire shop will take the lug off for a couple bucks.

So it's the lock in the center of the hubcap? Grind a groove in it and remove it with a large flat blade screw driver. Without the center lock, the hubcap will fall off on the first little bump in the road.

if center cap lock screw style i have had good luck with wedging in a big flat blade screw driver in the wave pattern and getting it to turn. or vary small vise grips if its a colored plastic nut style.

Thanks guys

I'm gonna hit it tomorrow...it has a nut in the center of the hubcap. His daughter was driving it and shredded the tire, it's been parked for months. We just moved in in April.

I'll try the screwdriver thing, if not, I'll try the holesaw. It looks like it will come off if I cut the hubcap around the nut...

I will post my results....hopefully it won't be a FAIL!! :doah:

all that is if its a metal nut thing is a 5/16 bolt with special head on it. you dont need to hole saw it out.
