i am down to this part everybody said i needed a 4 pronged socket this one has a place for 6 prongs to release it and i have searched everywhere for one!!! The overall diameter is just under 2" i believe, all the sockets i ahve found so far are over 2"!!! Please help me find what i need and the prongs are jsut about an inch apart from one another

Not the best pic but it might help

I have looked at all of them that they have and they are all too big. I have even had a mechanic come by and try to help me find it as well. And even he has had no luck in at as well!!

Looked into those and they are the wrong diameter, i am at a loss here, do you think it might be a special military socket that they only have, or do i have some sort of special front end that nobody know about, is there anyway i can contact a military base and see if they have it??? Thanks

have you just looked at them or actually tried using any of them?

use a hammer and punch as a last resort.

if your 4-prong socket is the right diameter my buddy just ground 2 prongs off and just used 2 prongs to carefully loosen the ring,,or you can take an old socket thats the right diameter and grind a couple of prongs on it...good luck..sometimes car dealerships will lend special tools if you know the mechanic personally..

somebody told me it is a military only tool or something i had my friend come over last night with about 6 different socket sizes and none of them matched up and he is starting to think as well that you cant just go to any parts store and buy this

did some research and found out that the front axles in the 84 are different than all the other years :( of course just my luck

I would take Kevin's advice and remove them with a hammer and soft or blunt punch. You will need the socket to torque them down when you reinstall but you can take a nut with you to the parts store and make sure you get the right socket. I got mine at a used tool store. Good luck.

This is how I did on a same situation: I used hammer and punch to remove nut, then I took piece of pipe that had proper ID, then with angle grinder I carefully made the sprongs to tube, occasionally test fitting the nut. Then I took a piece of flat stock, welded it to the pipe (opposite end of the sprongs, of course :wink1:), drilled a 1/2" hole to it and then filed it square to accept a 1/2" ratchet wrench.

You can use two punches that fit into the holes and use a screwdriver inbetween them to turn the ring off of the hub. its quick and easy. there should not be that much torque on them. I was a mechanich for many years and I never used the right socket. always just used this method rather than digging out the sockets I did have.

some of the sockets out there come with a squareish style peg on them. My hubs needed one with round pegs on them. This made the square like one seem like it wasnt the right size. I took a grinder to it and made the square pegs round and now it works fine.
