I'm buying a 6" pro comp suspension lift and a 3" body lift and installing myself. Problem is, is that I heard i would have to do regearing since I want to put on 40" tires. Is it possible to regear yourself? or about how much would it run to get regeared? also I heard that the 350 wouldn't be able to push 40"s is this true?

any info or help is aprreciated.

you could regear the truck yourself if you feel confident, or just take it somewhere if you dont. and your 350 can push the 40s if you regear it, thats sorta the point if doing it. i would do some stuff to help the 350 out though

dont et the pro comp lift get the tuff country lift. ez rides i think there called. ill be getting those soon and you may not want to go with a body lift. maybe a 1inch to be safe

if its just gonna see mud the body lift should be fine, but no specification on what he wants to use the truck for yet.....:D

yeah Its just for creek crossings and deep mud.. No rocks for me please :P

So If i regear I should be fine? what should i do to the engine to help out?

then you will be fine with a body lift. i ran one on my truck and loved it(for the most part) there are drawbacks but it should be fine
as far as the engine, im not much of and engine expert so i dunno

Surgeon generals warning on procomp

stay away from pro comp i have seen so many of that companies kits fail to preform that i think they need a disclaimer on the box just like ciggarettes it should read : for mallcrawlers only not intended for any real use :deal:!!! i havent seen pro comp on a k5 but i doubt they got it right on a fullsize when i have seen so many mini trucks & superdutys with faulty procomp kits. on a side note has anybody used the rough country 4" front springs on a k5. i want something that isnt super stiff

trucknace- i hear the rough countrys are really really stiff. im running superlift but thats just what i heard

would you be willing to break the engine down or do you want bolt on stuff. anyone correct me, but you could prob get a new carb, not sure how much it would help. but you could always rebuild the engine :D

Stock axles or not?

If they are the stock axles, you probably don't want to invest the money to regear them. With 40's, you'll break them and have to upgrade to bigger stuff and you'll lose most of your investment in the gears.

Shops will generally charge $1100-1500 for a gear change front and rear, the parts are about half that.

Changing gears is fairly involved and the gears will fail quickly if you don't do it right. Here's a writeup on what it takes.

Many people switch to a 10 bolt front and FF 14 bolt rear (both 8 lug) from a 3/4 ton truck for this reason. Many times 3/4 ton trucks had 4.10 gears which may be ok on 40's.

How about some more info on the truck? What year, trans, etc?

I had a 78 3/4 ton chevy(of course) longbed had about 6 inches of lift and 4 body lift had 10 bolt up front and 14 bolt in rear both had 4:11's truck would go any were. Note: ran 40 in gumbo mudder 4 speed bulldog and it was a dog!:bow:Note Edited thanks

Good point half ton axles may brake so money invested may be lost and new axles order! with gears agian. If this is a DD then 40" ae not so fun to pack around town parking lots are a joke:haha:

i believe a 350 would pull the 40"s fine with the regear! Will the axles hold Guess and Check not sure. But up grading is always nice. rebuild the motor:D or do carb wires, plugs, cap coil so on...

first off you dont NEED to regear to put a lift on. its not bad not to regear either. you will just get more low end power out of your truck with lower gears. iv seen a 350 with stock 4.10 gears run 56" tires so you will be fine.

High gears with big tires will burn up an auto tranny in a hurry.

Everything else is stock i believe except for exhaust..(dual flowmaster with cherry bomb glass pack)

My buddy just bought a 3/4 ton shortbed chev with the same lift, 6 inch suspension and 3 inch body, but the gears are 3.73 and it has a 350 and has no problem turning the 39.5 tsl's. But it also has a 4 speed too....
