Need help with my\'85 6.2 diesel blazer\'s rear differential

ok heres the deal. I have a 6.2 liter k10 1985 blazer with a 3.42 differential ratio. after a brief offroad trip i heard a knockin', so i figured something was wrong. pretty much to some it up the rear differential was torn to pieces litterally. now i need a new rearend. ive heard that the 3.42 ratios are pretty unreliable so i need advice one what i should do. i am contemplating either gettin a new 3.42 rearend. or i am going to try to put a different gera ratio on the blazer such as a 4.10 or 3.73 , but if so what steps to i have to take to change the gear ratio and how much $$$money am i lookin at spending???

any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks, brandoblazer

3.73's are pretty common. You could probably pick up a good used one for less than gears would cost. Then you need to match up the front gears. Probably the same deal.

oops. K10 is an eight lugger, isn't it. Randy's ring and pinion has good prices.

Fill out your profile, what size tires do you have? Gears are a pain to install from what I hear. Also you might wanna post this in the garage.

3.42s work well with a diesel because the power band is different from a gasser. You could step up to 3.73s, but unless you have a 700r4(overdrive) tranny I wouldn't recommend it.

Remember that if you change the gearing in the rear diff you'll also have to change out your front gears to match. Unless you are an experienced mechanic I wouldn't attempt the job yourself.

Once again, what tires are you running?
