I am gettting ready to "machine" my steering box for Hydro Assist and I am a little concerned about tapping the holes. The tap is tapered so how far do I tap the hole to get a proper seal on the fitting. I know if I run the tap all the way through then it the threads will be too large and will not seal. Need to know a thumb rule for running NPT threads. I saw somewhere if you leave 5 threads at the top of the tap that is the right depth. Any help or advice is appreciated. Oh I am tapping the top cap and I have a billet end cap from JKWOffroad.

The rule of thumb is three full turns for a fitting to go snug. Grab a fitting and use the trial and error method. If you can spin it in by hand three turns it's all good.

OK so go slow and take my time and test fit after I cut a couple threads ( a couple being 2 or 3):D.

I figured there was no steadfast rule for us non machinist types:D

Thanks Rene

Yeah, it's a lot easier to go slow...because once it's too deep you're screwed. :doah:

Actually I was going to tap it today to see if I would screw it up. I dont have the 3/8NPT to JIC-6 fitting though.

2EA....total of 4.

I might just get a piece of 3/8 NPT from Lowes today. I need to go there anyway for some home improvment crap. I'll let you know if I get to try the tap out.

Still waiting for word from the wife about tomorrow. Hopefully I can get free and we can finish the hydro install.......

Yep I am going to my bro in laws (he has NFL Ticket) to get my drink awn today:D. Just give me a call when the warden issues a pardon:haha:. Mine is in the air right now:D. Does Lowes sell NPT to -AN fittings?

I should be able to go to any hydraulic shop and pic up a couple of fittings eh? Are we just gonna run straight fittings on each end since the hose ends are 90s?

Ira

Edit: Damn you beat me. I have that one right by my house I should go check.
