hey all, i need to replace the power steering pump on the truck, its started screaming like a banchee. Problem is, i cant figure out how to keep the pully from turning when i try to undo the center bolt holding the thing on. I have to get the pully off to get the pump off to replace it.

is there an easy way im missing here???

sorry, forgot, 1986 M1009, completely stock. 6.2L/TH400/NP208 with 10bolts front and rear, rear gov. locker.

You can rent a P/S puller from most autoparts stores. There is no "center bolt" the pulley is a press fit and the puller required threads into the center of the shaft while grabbing the inner most lip of the pulley to remove it. It will require the puller, a wrench, and preferably an air gun with the proper socket to remove easily.

ill go out and check again, but i used a CD as a mirror to check and it looked like there was an allen (sunken hex head) of about 10mm or 3/8in. i would assume there is a bolt to press fit the pulley back on the new pump??? or is there a second tool i need to rent, a pully installer as well as a puller?

and then it should be strait forward to get the pump off right? four bolts on the front holding the pump to the bracket, disconnect the power steering lines, pull the pump, swap the reseviour from the old pump to the new pump, reverse install, top off fluid, and put the pulley back on on... am i missing anything?

Yep, what he said.

Yes there is a tool for putting the pulley back on but it can also be done with a long threaded bolt and a washer and nut. (most P/S pumps will give you this hardware along with the new/rebuilt pump). Yes the end of the P/S shaft is broached with a hex shape (still have no idea why) but it isn't used for anything.

the old style had a bolt there and you needed the allen to hold the shaft while turning the bolt. That is the old style though, like 74ish cant get that style anymore anyways. Anyhow, the install tool comes w/ the new pump and its easy to install. Make sure you bolt on the brackets before you press on the pulley, the bolts wont fit if the pulley is on first.

golden... far be it from me to disagree with the experts, thats why i come here for advice :)

yall just saved me more headache and trouble than i could even predict. time to go rent the puller. :)

The old pumps had a NUT that held the pulley on (the shaft and pulley were also keyed) and the shaft was not broached with a hex.

time shouldnt be a problem, i just quit my job, so i figured id take care of the truck, and a few other things, before i went job hunting again.

another heads up. i had alot of problems with autozone and napa pumps. the AC Delco pump from the dealer wasnt much more money and i have had zero issues

x2, i go to autozone to get the free tool rental, then go to the dealer to get the part. I always get the part number that has the reservoir already installed.
