Need help with Rounded Engine Oil Drain Plug

Thats what you'd think!

Yes,you would assume an oil pan would be the last thing to rust out on your truck--but here in new england acid rain climate even oil doesnt stop rust for long--the salt we dump on our icy roads is like battery acid too --I had to replace the pan on the 86 305 I put in one of my trucks, and the 74 K20 doesn't need a drain plug anymore, since it leaks out by itself!--looks like it was under the bottom of the ocean with barnacles growing on it for a hundred years--and oil is oozing out of its "pores"--more than one pan I tried to loosen the drain plug on tore the "bung" right out of the pan it was so thin!..its simply amazing (and very depressing) too see how fast things rot away here....:frown1:

ya know I have had good luck with using the previous mentioned idea. Using a 12 point socket that is just barely too small and smacking it on there with a BFH, then it might twist right out. I have done that many times to locking lug nuts on wheels when you dont have the socket key. I did this trick a few times on my dana 60 I just cant remember where at on the damn diff I did it.

hehe, speaking of barnicles.. you can't imagine how many pans i do in the marine business... had a Bayliner a couple years ago that had no functioning bildge pump in it... well, i look down in the bildge and you could see the oil and bildge water flowing back in forth thru a hole the size of a baseball in the pan.. you'd fire it up and would suck bildge water in thru the hole... :eek1: :haha:

Got the D@mn Bolt out

Thanks for the help everyone. Here's what I did: The PO used some sort of hard plastic gasket that was partially blocking the bolt head. That was preventing me from getting a good bite on the bolt head. I trimmed that away with a chisel and utility knife. Once that was cleared I used a 13/16 spark plug socket to remove the bolt. I'll be replacing the drain plug and gasket with the proper parts so this doesn't happen again.:D
I did try the chisel trick but I stopped when the chisel slipped and nearly punctured the pan.
