Hello guys I just got a 91 c1500 with a 350 engine. When I got it the head gasket was blown and one of the heads was cracked. Well I got another head took took it to napa and they did a valve job and resurfaced them. Well my problem is that I disturbed the distributor and now it doesnt even start. Well I was trying to follow the cheltons manual on how to set the timing on a default position (you know cranking the crank pulley until it is on the mark of cylinder 1 and then do some other stuff) but when I was trying to crank it it had some misfires and then I stop cranking it and after 3 or 4 seconds the engine burped blue smoke. It made an air noise and all the smoke came out. It scared the crap out of me I thought It was in fire. So first I want to know if those were signs of a blown engine or what could that be? Also need some tips on how to bring the truck to start again so I can use a timing light. Thanks a lot

You have to set the engine to TDC on the correct stroke, then insert the dist.
Start from scratch and do it right.

Pull the DS valve cover, and set it to TDC on the correct stroke
Insert the dist
unplug the timing connector near the brake booster
Start truck and set timing to 0

Thanks man I will try that later on today. I didnt remove the valve cover last time. Should I worry about the smoke that came off the engine or is it normal? Sorry for all the noob questions I am new to the chevy's world. Thanks again

Ok. So I got it to start which was the original concern, but now when I set the timing to 0* with the timing gun it works perfect it doesnt stall and I dont have to rep up the engine but when I turn it off and plug the wire back (the one that controls the advance), unplug the negative to erase the code, try to turn it back on and it runs like crap, I have to push on the gas for a little and then when it doesnt try to stall anymore then I go check the timing and it is off again by maybe 10-15 degrees. So what do you guys think? What could be causing the issue? Bad vacuum?

With the connector plugged in the timing is going to be off. The ECU controls the timing so don't pay attention to that.

The bad running could be any number of things. How was it running before you had this issue?

It was running fine before it overheated. Well thinking about it maybe a little rich. So do you think that I shouldnt disconect the advance (ECM) when adjusting the timing?

No. You adjusted it correctly. Once you plug it back in the ECU takes over control of the timing advance/retard amount.

Something else must be wrong. Are you getting a check engine light?

Yes I am. Also it says check gauges. Tomorrow I will read the codes whats the worse scenario that I can expect from the reading?
