So I bought a 79 k5 blazer the other day. Its in rough shape but the price was too good to pass up. Anywho, the previous owner told me it leaks between the transmission and transfer case(it does,BAD). So I'm looking for a guide on how to pull the tcase, I've been looking for probably 2 days and haven't found a detailed step by step guide. Thanks

Its not that difficult provided you have a suitable floor jack or trans jack with wheels--or you can bench press 150 lbs lying on your back..

I highly reccomend a jack ,especially if its a NP203 full time case or a cast iron NP 205,those are ingots!..the aluminum cases aren't that bad,but a 79 should have a cast iron one if it hasn't been monkeyed with..

All that needs to be done to temove the transfer case is to unbolt the driveshaft --some can be unbolted at the transfer case end, others have a slip yoke so you must dissconnect it at the rear axle yoke, its bolts and straps there usually, some have u-bolts..be careful not to let the u-joint caps drop in the dirt!..I take the shaft right off,so it wont get in my way..
I wrap a few layers of electrical tape over the caps, before prying the shaft out of the yoke..so the needle bearings wont get dirty or lost when the cap falls off..

Then you need to remove the speedo cable ,your 79 should have a cable,it just unscrews ,use pliers on the round nut thing..
..then dissconnect the shifter linkages ,its just a clip or cotter pin holding them on usually..

.if there is a bracket to the frame on the passenger side,or a torque rod going from the case to the bellhousing bolt, those must be unbolted...then put the jack under it and its not a bad idea to wrap a chain around the case and jack and bolt it together so it cant slip off--and take off the bolts holding the transfer case to the adapter between the tranny and case, there will be as few as 4 of them,or more, depending on which transmission you have..then pull it backwards off the adapter and lower it to the ground...

Its off!..then you can proceed to replace the seals or gaskets that are leaking..

CHOCK THE WHEELS FIRST!!!!

Just adding an important safety item.

1) hi and welcome...

2) get a repair manual...

3) be safe! these trucks have heavy parts! not to mention you're going to have a real bad day if it rolls over you...:thumb:

Yeah, that was a very important step I overlooked..:doah:..definately chock the wheels or at least use the E-brake!..

Had a friend take a driveshaft out of a truck one day at his shop and he forgot "park" no longer works when the shaft is removed!..luckily he didn't move and the only injury he got as the truck rolled to the other end of the parking lot,was a black stripe from grease on the front diff as it rolled over him....and he knows better, been a mechanic 20+ years..we all space things out once in a while I guess..
