Recently purchased a 1978 k5 blazer. Has a 350 and a th350. Transmission was leaking from the pan. Come to find out none of the bolts were tight. So I dropped the pan and replaced the gasket. I made a rookie mistake and overfilled the tranny. So I started back from square one. Now tranny is full!! But it won't grab any gears. Once I out the truck back in park it makes a grinding noise as if I'm rolling them slam it into park

Double check that the tcase is in gear and not partially engaged.

Don't feel bad. Our work trucks have manual transfer cases and guys regularly prank each-other by putting the t-case in neutral. I've seen more than a couple trucks hauled off to the auto shop behind a tow truck over it when no one figured it out.

I wonder what the guys at the auto shop say when another one rolls in with the t-case in neutral LOL!

I put the 4x4 into gear. Now it engages but the truck still doesn't move

Run it in neutral for a bit to fill the trans back up. Possible issue with the filter install and it's sucking air. How much fluid did you end up using to fill it?

Truck is going into gear. But once I give it gas the tires move just a little but doesn't move

No issues until I changed the fluids. I drove the truck for about 10 minutes when I bought it. Then drove it around the block once I got it home. Shifted just fine. I only dropped the pan due to the leak. Which was due to the guy not tightening the pan bolts

YER TRANS BURNED UP?

YER TRANS BURNED UP?
I was thinking the same. I bet the trans or torque converter is shot and the trans fluid change did it in. I swapped out a TH400 once upon a time and didn't change the torque converter and I drove it about 5 miles and then it acted like it kicked into neutral and that was it until I changed the converter.

I talked to a transmission guy today. He said my transfer case isn't going all the way into gear. That I need to adjust my linkage. I've read that in the no205 you can adjust them. I've also read that you can't

Someone will probably chime in and tell me I'm wrong, but the shift rails in the Tcase itself are probably binding. Also all 78 k5's that I have seen have NP203 transfer cases. You sure it's a 205?Hope you get it fixed.

I'm just going off of what the previous owner told me. But after seeing his shotty work!!! I'm starting to thing it's a 203. Me to! I'm running out of time

I meant to say that all 78 k5's from the FACTORY that I have seen have had NP203's.If indeed the Tcase is 205, the shift rails themselves are pretty easy to take out and inspect . Of course before you do that , check your shifter. The shift rails on a 205 can be removed by taking out the "poppet" screws/ springs/ balls on the top of the case. There are two. Use a pen magnet to get the ball out after the screw/ spring has been removed. The shift rails should be able to then be removed.

I'm gonna crawl under it in the morning and double check the transfer case
