On my 71 roadster project, I am running a high rise, duel carb intake on the top of the big block, well this looks all gravy but I cant shut the hood..

all the cowl hoods I have looked at, are not funtional cowl hoods, they are regular style with a full skin/frame on the botton and just a raised 2 inch cowl. First problem is cutting into the frame of the hood, second issue is that 2 inches of a cowl still wont be enough. 2 inches is the highest steel cowl I can find for any 67-68 or 69-71.

so I have thought about adding a scoop on the hood, or maybe just having the air cleaner come up through it, or even getting one of those bling bling chrome scoops the have the little doors on them.

any ideas?

I want to shoot the paint on this before to long, but I need to get the whole hood thing figured out first. I have 3 67-68 hoods and 2 69-71 hoods to choose from if I decide to make my own set up. But I think the 67-68 hood, "pictured" looks better and flows with the truck.

any ideas or example would help out a bunch, I want this to look clean and not choped up or getto!

Will it shut without the air cleaners ??? Have you tried low prifile air cleaners like the Edelbrock ones where the filters sit on either side of the carb . Oh and BTW , did you get progressive linkage with that setup ? :xmas:

He just described to me and it sounds like a tunnel ram . Looks like a hole and velocity stacks will be timeless good looking bling :D

ttt

I think I will just go with velosity stacks with some K&N filters on top, rather the getto up some sort of scoop or cowl, what do you guys think??

run a Hilborn.. baddest thru hood look you can get... :saweet:

one of these days i'll figure out how to get my scanner working with XP so i can get some more pics on.. wouldn't dare take a pic now, sitting under a cover in one of the bays with stuff all over it..

tons of neat stuff in that car.. Tony Feil 396 (about 500hp), T400, 12b /4.10's, polished SS firewall, polished intake (never again!), full Autometer dash, fuel cell, all steelbraided, Welds, blah, blah...

paints pretty slick too, about 3/4 blue pearl.. car turns purple under sodium lights, freaky... :pimp1:

Paul...is that a Mr. Gasket air cleaner???
I did a 70 Chevelle...and we used one.

Shawn

I've cut/crimped many hood openings...they're pretty easy to do.

First you cut the opening...(make sure the hole is a 1/4" smaller)

Then take 2... 1/4" pieces of flat steel (2"x15"x1/4)
and sandwich the hood sheet between the 2 plates....exposing a 1/4".
I use 2 clamps...no more...they just get in the way.

Next...take a metal finishing hammer...and a dolly...and start tapping the sheet metal down untill you get a right angle.

Now...I remove the bottom plate and carefully hammer the lip until it's crimped.

To complete...the corners are the trickest part...
I have a half-round dolly that helps...

If you take your time and work the metal a little at a time..
You'll be very happy with the crimping...it also adds strength to the center of the hood.

its the Hilborn style, may have been being made by those guys back in the day.. its a dual with a custom base for a single..

i lucked out with the 69.. being a 69 it has the 2 raised sections on either side that are the perfect distance apart for the Hilborn. just below that body line is the cut so its nice and rigid. i was able to just slap some black door edgegaurd on it and let it fly.. if it wasn't already painted i would have done the peen.. good tip btw

i do have "multiple" pieces of heavy flatstock for just such occasions tho :wink1: they work great on door skins too.. :grind: :weld:

tell ya what, nothing quite like watching that thing torque over to the side when pinning yourself in the seat... :saweet:

i was originally gonna run a fuel and vacuume gauge right behind the Hilborn, but never got around to it...

thats the car i learned if i ever want a polished intake, i'll pay $100 to $200 extra for it.. my time is way more valuable than that.. they say it takes about 60 hrs.. think i did it in about 40 :screwy: never again, hell, i can make a grand in that time...
