what year xj shaft fits a 79 k5? Did some searching, couldn't find the split year...

I don't know the years. I thought that it was the XJ Cherokee.
Whats with this XJ Steering Shaft thingy
I tried and search "XJ" and it doesn't give me anything. I have moved from a XJ into the burby and I am with a Jeep Cherokee XJ club. What's with this mod? Are there any write-ups or pics?

Bought a brandy new one off of fleabay last night...65$
Mine took a good amount of force to get the nylon to let go enough that I could make it the correct length. I believe that mine came from Crown Automotive. It must be powder coated, because I didn't completely ruin the coating!
I picked mine up for under $20 and 10 minutes of my time to pull it.
Collapsing it took a little heat with a small butane torch.
Remember it takes a little file action on the end of the steering column to make room for the upper pinch bolt on the shaft.

I used a steering shaft from an early 2000s GM full size van on my 85. Inexpensive and fit fine.
