I have a 1972 K5 that currently has a 350 with a lobed cam. I want to either get a rebuilt, crate, or re manufactured installed. I'm in Denver Colorado. Where should I go and what should I do? LS and diesel are way out of my price range. I would like a 383 stroker, but I don't want to spend $5,000 either. Any input and suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Any more information? Like do you have a place to pull and work on the engine?

The block shop for the bottom end and sch racing heads for the heads. or Dave at sch can do it....

You can build a 383 for 5 g if you want. Might be pushing it to have everything done for you. What's your HP goal?

5G would install a 6.0L LS

An engine swap is not an easy task if you don't have the right tools and equipment to get it done.

If you come up with an engine. I could do the swap. Real reasonable compared to a full shop. Ask around on here for references.

I need the money to help pay for my shop floor I am having poured Wednesday. :doah:

+1 for KTMs quality of work.

For engine shop I prefer Ridge Reamer machine

1. Figure out what your budget is. That is going to be the major factor in what route you go. Since you won't be doing the work, remember that labor and shop charges are significant.

2. Performance/use goals. You say you want a 383, so it sounds like you want better than stock performance.

3. Timeline. How fast do you need this done? The fastest way is to order a crate motor and have it shipped to the shop or have someone do the swap. Having a motor rebuilt or doing fabrication (for LS swaps and the like) can take more time. There a lot of crate/short block options in the 383 realm. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...-1&storeId=10001&N=1010175+4294961418&Ntt=383

Good luck!

when I did my engine the price of having the machining done then doing the assembly and install myself was higher than buying a crate motor from Jegs. It was just under $1800.00 with free freight to my house. Also has a warranty on it where the rebuilt wouldn't have. I went with a direct replacment 2 bolt main of the stock motor in my 87. One day when the budget is there I want to build a 383 for it myself.
