Need Opinions of 2006 GMC 2500HD 4WD??

I have read where there have been some issues with the diesel engine, Allison transmission, etc. on the earlier year 2500HD diesel trucks. Have those issues and problems been resolved on the 2006 trucks?

Also, read where there is a current problem, in 06 diesel trucks, with glow plugs and a recall has been issued. Is that for all 2006 diesel trucks or just certain ones?

Dave

definetely go with the duramax 2500h.d. i would say that is the best machine out there right now in my opinion my buddy has an 05 the thing is unstoppable and he runs bio diesel so it is nothing for fuel plus you can check out the banks web site for some heavy horse and torque

I rented an '06 rig with the same specs as you talked about. I used it to pull a 11,000 lbs trailer 2000 miles. I loved it. I set the cruise on 75-80 and it would only downshift at REALLY steep inclines.

One thing that was hard to get used to was the engine braking. When driving down steep hills touching the brakes would cause it to downshift, sometimes a couple of gears. The issue was it seemed like it didn't want to up-shift. I would take it out of tow mode to "make" it shift...

To get it to shift up you simply tap the throttle, just a tap not holding :D

Took me a while to get use to the engine braking but once I fugured how to use it all was good.

I haven't heard anything about or know anything about engine braking. Is that on all GM diesel trucks? Is it a safety feature designed for use in mountainous type terrain or does it work everywhere and all the time?

It only works when you engage the tow mode button on the column shifter. It just keeps you from having to ride the brakes while towing a heavy load.

I have a 04.5, thats when they started using the LLY. Knock on wood but I have have no issues and love the truck compared to my old 6.5. I tow both a large 5vr and an enclosed car trailer and the Allison Grade Braking is outstanding. As stated above just takes a little getting use to.I think you would be happy with it. The only problem I'm aware of is the recall for the glow plug controller needing to be reprogramed.

I recently was at a dealer looking at diesel trucks and asked him about the glow plug recall thing. He said it was actually a very simple resetting in the vehicle computer that was accomplished in a few minutes and no mechanical changes were required.

I am searching prices now. Most 2006, 2500HD, 4WD, SLT, LBZ engine, Crew Cab, Shortbox trucks have sticker prices around $47K + -. I checked with Autobytel and they offered the truck for about $43K. I work for a company that does large scale business with GM and am eleigible for their "supplier discount" which is about the same price as a GM employee would get. That price is roughly about a 10% discount off the sticker price. One salesman told me any savy buyer off the street could get the same discount so I don't think I am getting any special deal offerings and am evaluating my options.

With GM sales dwindling and their financial position suffering I am thinking there will be a price reduction, additional purchase incentives, or similar so I am debating whether to wait for such or not.

I also used the "supplier discount"..It was about 5K off the sticker price.
Hard to say if waiting will save you $$..maybe if you had someone to inform you of 'inside information' to find out if they will or not??
I am lovin my 05! I also got the 8' bed and REALLY glad I did. I worlk on houses outside of my normal job and it is nice to have the tailgate shut with 4x8 sheets of plywood or sheetrock in the back. Not only that but I just got a 9.5' truck camper(cab over) to ride in the back while I tow my K5 :D :D
AWESOME Rig!

My 05' 2500HD 6.0 also downshifts when going downhill to slow you down without having to hit the brakes. I guess it's not just the diesels.
