I just off the phone with guy who said he has a step van with a 4bt/th400. He claims the engine is new or close to new, runs great bla, bla.... He wants $3500 for it which is just out of my reach right now. I do want it. I have a m1009 with 6.2/th400 and a 91' k5 Silverado ed. I want to keep the 09 (I want to keep both:( ) but am willing to sell the 91'. I could also take my 6.2 and put it in the step van and sell it, but I won't have time for that untill mid. 07' and I can't float the money for that long.

What to do?

Live within your budget. Don't over extend yourself. Be patient, find a way to earn a little extra money. Then buy it.

a 4 bolt 350 and th400 arent worth bankrupting yourself dood, you'll come across another...

A 4bt is a 4 cylinder turbo diesel made by cummins

Mated to a TH400?

Best advice you could get here. This motor swappin to sell the old thing with some of my stuff rarely goes as smoothly as hoped

Keep in mind that the desireable 4BT has the Bosch P-pump. Those are the only ones that really fetch a premium. The majority of 4BT's do not have the P-pump, and are worth far, far less. The 4BT box vans came with both TH400's and SM465's, and are really not too hard to find. If all you want is the drivetrain, $3500 is way too much. I've seen many 12V Cummins 6BT/ NV4500 combos/ whole trucks sell for less than that.

But he said the engine was new or very close to new. A new diesel engine will cost about 3500 bucks. Then the fact that the van came with the 6.2 (from the factory) also means he can install his old one and sell the van for a profit. But his real problem is the stretch on the money until he can sell off one or both of the uneeded rigs. The guy with the van want to trade for you 91?

No, he won't trade. I offerd the 91 and a 82 ford e150 van (together).

He told me to call him on Thurs/Fri. when he gets back. I've got a few days to think about it. My biggest reason for wanting THIS van is the newness of the engine and I get everything I need for the swap in one package. 4BT's are not easy to come by, in any form, around here.

Painful, but very good advice.

There will be many more when you're ready to buy.
