Got a job so the projects on Big Ugly can restart. I'd like to put a higher capacity pan with a drain plug on the TH400 and also some diff covers with drain plugs on the D60 and 14FF.

Not looking for chrome, light weight aluminum, or anything special...just tough enough for what it is and a drain plugs. Value for the money, it's not a rock crawler or a show truck.

Got any recommendations?

crane diff covers are freakin insane tough!
$200:eek1:

what about diy4x4? getting my diff covers from there. think they are about 90 or so.

I used DIYs as a base and made my own. I dont' think I have ever seen diff covers with drain plugs, haven't looked very hard though. I plan to drill and tap the bottom of both my axles someday.

trans pans the aluminum ones are good and bad because they dissapate heat pretty good but if you hit one on a rock they will break. The chrome ones hold in heat but will dent if you hit it with a rock. There are stock deep 400 pans out there but I never really looked to hard for a part number.

I'd use Mag-Hytec covers and pan.

ruff stuff makes great covers, 3/8 plate and they do countersunk bolts and drain plugs. I have one on my 14bolt and will be geting one for my 60

It's in there.

I'm starting to think I'll just buy a drain plug kit from Summit and put that in the stock TH400 pan. There might be a 700R4 in this thing's future...

There used to be a company that made a 700R4 pan that had a built in skidplate...anyone remember who? Wondering if they ever made a TH400 pan.

MagHytec...notice I said value for the money...there stuff is SO friggen expensive...and then there's the results of 4WOR's infamous diff cover test a few years back...CRUNCH...

I like the Ruff Stuff products. Time to start saving the pennies...only got a couple grand worth of truck stuff to do and many grand worth of house stuff to do...

The funny thing is all kinds of other aftermarket diff covers for different, not GM axles come with drain plugs but it seems like no one wants to do it for GM axles...weird. I can drain and refill all four diffs on my Tracker and XL7 in less time than Big Ugly's two would take.

I've used the B&M chrome deep pans from Summit then add an auxiliary tranny cooler to help with the heat. Yes they are chrome, but they are fairly tough and reasonably priced.

I found the TransDapt Slam Guard pans on Summit.

No drain plugs though.

Eh, might as well just buy a different pan at that point.

I'm thinking just adding a drain plug to the stock one is more along the lines of my budget anyways.

Yeah...so the guys at TransDapt/Hedman say the pans do come with drain plugs...I think I need to call Summit and have someone actually lay their hands on one.

Andrew, Find one off a HMMWV(tranny pan). They have a factory drain with a divit to get it below the pan level, so all the fluid drains out when you pull the plug.. PM Mr.Chevy4x4. I sold him my TH400 with a HMMWV pan if you need pics. Those install yourself kits for tranny pans ar ok, but still leak a bit and leaves about 1/2 inch of fluid in the pan above the drain plug lip.

Ooooh, ought to go ask around on Steel Soldiers for a HMMWV pan. Thanks!

Where'd you get your pan?

I figure the point of a do it yourself drain plug is that at least you can lower the level so you don't end up wearing stinky, red or brown clothes when you lower the pan. I always change my filters when I change the fluid.

I, umm, can't say where mine came from...

Actually, it was a leaking one from a truck at work. We ordered a new one and I found out the bolt holes wer coned on the old one. I fixed the hole with a punch and hammer and "pulled it from the trash" and took it home.

I do see what you are saying about draining most of the fluid prior to dropping the pan. I have taken several ATF(worst fluid in any vehicle IMHO) baths. I hate that stuff, but found out that pinesol gets the smell out of your clothes.

My first truck/vehicle was a '86 K5 with a TH700R4...that had brownish fluid in it. Dad and I smelled like that chit for days.

I put drain plugs or drain plug equipped pans in every vehicle I own that doesn't already come with them.

Somehow I figured that's what you would say...:D I've got no clue where the USMC crash/fire/rescue yellow D-rings I have came from either...
