hey guys, i picked up a d70HD a month or so ago that i plan to put into my rig. i havent had a chance to tear into it, but its out of a crewcab dually that had a 350 in it with plow package (i believe). what were the stock ratio's available in these? any stock locker as an option? is there a carrier break, if so where does it break? i know ill find out the ratio once i tear into it, but i wont be able to for a while. thanks guys:bow:

Nothing really out of the ordinary, typical 3.73 or 4.10 stuff mostly (along with some rare 4.56 available). Power Locks were possible but I've never seen one. Older stuff could have had a 2 piece open carrier that's good for a cheaper Detroit (like a 14 bolt). The ratio break is 4.10 / 4.56. :thumb:

This makes it look like there isn't a carrier break.

There are different housing offsets though (which means that some D70 gearsets won't work in other D70's and some D70's can only use a couple different ratios).

I don't think the 70HD has the bad offset but I don't know D70's all that well.

There were no factory lockers in dana 70's.

i believe its out of an '83 or '85. from what ive seen (while pricing gears and lockers), the 70hd can only use 70hd gears and lockers (different gear sets for d70u and d70hd).

john, you said 2 piece carrier, and a cheaper detroit, i didnt know about that, the only detroit ive seen for the 70HD is like $550 or $575. is the 2piece carrier out of a different 70 which allows u to use a different, cheaper detroit?

Yeah, some of the early / mid 70's D70HD'd used a 2 pc carrier so for those there is a drop in Detroit. The carrier is pretty hard to come by, there was one on Pirate a couple of months ago but it was $100 so by the time you add the locker it was no real savings.

There is definitely a carrier break, 4.10/4.56 same as a D60.

A note on brakes...I have a '85 K30 with a D70HD.
My drums were worn past specs and the shoes were shot.
Due to prices I checked into converting to rear discs.
The only disc conversion available requires you to goto a single wheel application.
The drums are huge, heavy, and expensive. I paid $110 a piece, they list at $199 each.
The rest of the brake hardware is a little pricey also.

yea the brakes on it are frozen, so im going to disc's using kerts diy4x kit and 14b srw hubs

When you say no factory lockers, do you mean for GM?? Buddy has a PL that had 4.56s out of a Dodge dually wrecker. Also looking on Dana Expert shows that a No spin was available along with the PL.....

The expensive detroit is more expensive because it comes with the 2 piece carrier, as well as the detroit locker unit. I don't know if you can buy just the carrier itself from Eaton now, but it seems only older D70's had it. Every D70 front axle I have seen (1 dodge, 1 IH) had the 2 pc, open diff.

Oh, and some D70's did have a Detroit as a factory option...they show up in my Dana Spicer bom catalogues. I don't think GM used them, though...just the power lock clutch posi.

if that is a factory k30 dually with a 350 stock, good chance it has 4.56 gears, saw one at the jy. (weakest motor in a k30 needed all the gear it can get)

yea it was a crewcab k30 with 350ci, im hopin its got 4.10/4.56 and some kind of limited slip at least

I guess I got real luck, mine had 4.88 gears in it. I pick it up at a junk yard, so I have no way of telling what it came out of. The owner of the yard thought it might have came from a UPS truck.

Don't really mean anything, but was looking on Dana expert, and not one 70 rear that GM used had any type of posi/locker. But looked at Ford and Dodge, and there were a sh1tload of them.....

Well, back in July of 2007 I called RuffStuff and talked to them several times about the application. At that time they made a disc conversion for the D70hd, but you could not use it with dual tires.

If they have updated then great, too bad it wasn't about 7 months ago.

That is possible that it won't work with dual tires. I didn't ask him when I ordered mine.

However, I'm running H1's and they have similar backspacing as dually wheels.

I converted my 70HD to disc usign Kert's brackets.

Had a local guy weld the new tabs on and bolted the brackets in place.

I used 14 bolt hubs on my 70HD to make it a little wider as well.. to match the DRW dana60 up front.
Running 16.5 H1's

Reddog, how do you like the DIY set up?

I'm hoping mine will show up tomorrow.

Great brackets,
I have his B52's, rear hangers, shackles, front shackles, front/rear shackle mounts...
Always been pleased with product and service!

You will need 16.5 wheels to fit over teh brackets and caliper though
