I have a 12 rear with the govlocker has bad ring and pinion, also have an open 12 bolt... Will the ring and pinion interchange

Do you mean interchange housing to housing or gears to diff?

Housing to housing, yes. If gears to diff it'll depend on the ratios of each set.

Either way you'll need to set the gears up again, it won't be a drop in.

Yes. Assuming a similar ratio. 12 bolts have a carrier break at 3.73 and up and 3.42 and down.

Yes both 3.73 but I was told by a couple local wrecking yards that the open diff wouldn't fit in the gov lock housing so thinking I can just use the r&p and should be fine

Housing is the same.

Yeah now they're telling me the thickness of the ring gear is diff for the diff carriers

If they are both 3.73 the ring gear will fit on an open carrier or a gov lock carrier.

The axle housing is the same. I.e. the gov lock and the open carrier both will go in the axle housing the same.

The confusion sounds like they think you asked if you could use the gov lock carrier and make it an open carrier. Which you can't.

But are they both truck carriers. I know the heights if if car 12 bolt carriers is different than truck 12 bolt carriers
