I have wanted a full size Chevy either truck for blazer for years, and finally getting around to getting one I hope. My budget for the blazer itself is 1000, I know its not a lot.

I want something I can take the top off of, drive to URE and have fun, nothing extreme and then make the trip back home (no tow rig or trailer, and don't see either of those happening for awhile). Will be a slow build up over the years, I have made the mistake of buying Jeeps or a Toyota and trying to build it all at once and getting burned out...ect.

So right now I have 4 options. And would love any input/advice from yall.

Option 1 is to buy a '72 and a '73 as a package, '72 is a CST and runs, 350v8) but bad tranny, '73 has a good tranny. This is over my budget by a few hundred, but maybe I could sell off the extra parts of the '73 to recoup some money. But they would be a longer term project for me, not done by the end of the summer.

Option 2 is a running driving '83 blazer with a 305 v8 and factory AC that blows cold. It has new shocks, and exhaust but needs cat converters put on. Also will need new tires soon, but it was a daily driver. It is right at my 1000 price limit.

Option 3 is a '77 with rebuilt engine(not sure what all was done) and some sort of lift kit, looks around 4in. Rough paint. It is also right at 1000.

Option 4 is do nothing now, and wait till I get more money.

Who is wheeling with a 305 v8? What are the specs of the rig it is in.

I am leaning toward the running driving blazer with ac and 305 since I can take my time over a year or two and have fun, maybe learn and build a engine during that time then swap it in later. Think it would be harder to add a/c to a non a/c blazer

Am I crazy to think I could drive a fairly stock K5 on 31/33's an hour down the highway, drive around just to get outdoors and have fun, then drive back?

Guess Ill stop my ramble here. Thanks yall.

(Should say my last jeep was cj7, 2.5 lift, 31's, full cage, and stock drivetrain, a blast to drive. Then a toy truck, v6,th350,duals, 36's...got burned out and sold it before it was done.)

I'm running a 305/700r4/208 and have no complaints. not a big deal for wheeling with a 305 and 36" tires. maybe for pulling a trailer.

Get the 83 with a/c !!!! I jumped on the first one I found that was stright an ran...I wish I had looked around and got one with a/c. BUT I do love the one I have.

Get the 83 quick! before some other crazy nuck gets it first! The only real drawback of the 305 is it will prolly have 3.08 gears in the axles, that will be great on the highway for economy, but bad for trailwork. I'm going to put an A/C unit in my 81 someday, and I plan on it being a pretty penny.

how about a 90 with 350 that runs? I know a bud who has one used as a fishing truck. Not sure how much he wants but he said he would sell it cheap. Can go look tomorrow for you. Its in Columbia, SC.

Personally I think the power difference in a fuel injected versus the carb is freakin night and day. Ive owned both.

im pretty sure nearly all k5s have 3.08s and i would jump on the K5. as a daily driver it is probably less ****ed over by previous owners!

Just found a 88' K5 yesterday that is factory optioned up and pretty straight for $700.00 The guy is hurting for $$$ so he may negotiate. Let me know if your interested and I will get photo's. Located in southern CO. so it may not work out.

Check craigslist, I just did the exact thing you are looking to do, bought a K5 on a $1000 budget. Just looked on the Winston-Salem craigslist quickly and found this http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/car/721978569.html have no idea of the shape nor the quality of the mods but hey its only $800. Where u at in NC, I'm in Walnut Cove.

Hey, Im in winston salem. I actually emailed him the other day when he listed that. Was told it had 1 tons and 42's or 44's, he broke and axle so put in 1/2 tons and 38 thornbirds. Body had damage from trees and mudding. Decided to pass, since I want to drive it to ure one day, dont want 11in. of lift.

What did you end up getting for 1000?

Thanks. Sure if you are already over there and could take a look that'd be great. But ofcourse don't go out of your way to go look.

Right now I am trying to decide between the '83 with 305/auto/AC and no rust or wait a bit and try to find one with f.i.. I know fuel injection is better offroad, but are the stock carbs on these 305's known for being esp. bad and dieing in off camber situations? Or can they be tuned alright.
I used to do some wheeling in a 82 cj7 with a carb and did'nt have much problem on or offroad...just had to get it adjusted every now and then.

we about to head down that way in a bit, will take the camera and take some pics. FI is a ton better, but carbed 350s are fine IF you have a good carb, which I never seemed to have. You need to have the motor tuned just right so it doesnt idle down so bad when offroading and climbing. Mine was a constant battle on keeping it from running too rich. If you are going to be driving the Blazer more often than not, wait for an FI, you will apreciate the power and fuel economy. My 91 K5 on 33x12.50x17s gets almost the same mpg as my 02 Camaro SS:D

Thanks 91SCK5.

Just called the guy with the '83 to get more info. Turns out it has 124k miles, he is the second owner. First was an older lady, and he works at a body/paint shop. Tires are bald, has the 700r4, clean inside and out, never wrecked. Now just have to decide between a 305 or holding out for 350tpi, but this seems like a pretty solid place to start.

'83 all the way IMO. I bought my '85 for $1000 with a 305/350turbo/203 and 3.73 gears. i drove it for a YEAR before the tranny went out. No other problems the whole time i've owned it. Only reason for the tranny was it had a shift kit and it'd grab a 3rd if i romped on it. I kinda over worked it and shoulda used a tranny cooler :doah:

As for the 3.08 gears and 700r i've had one and it's high geared but for highway and light wheeling it's not that bad. I'd buy another if the price were right and i actually needed one

you just learn to upgrade. I've had it 2 years and changed alot. you will learn what you want and you'll just be tempted :D

305 still runs

What did you end up getting for 1000?

'76 th 350/th350, engine was rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago with all GM performance parts (seller told me that as well as gave me a complete parts list with part #s), it has rust issues but the seller had already bought new floor pans, rockers, front cab mounts, and inner fenders from LMC and those all came with it I just gotta put em in, had new 31x10" tires, also came with a '76 pick up cab and tailgate, he said he was gonna get a short box and shorten it to fit on the blazer frame and make a pickup out of it. Mechanically all I gotta do to it is rebuild or replace the quadrajet, other than that it runs and drives great. The rust is more than I had wanted but it came with enough extra parts I could sell all them and have my money back so I couldnt resist.

Whenever you get somethng figured out let me know and maybe we can work out a trip to Uwharrie sometime and ifyou need a hand working on anything let me know when Im home from school (UNCC), Im only 20 mins away.

OH and good trucks come in ugly packages as well. bought this gem and only paid $800 for it and all i've had to do in the 4-5 months i've owned is is change the starter. ....and of course pay for more gas. Lots of it

Drive it daily with 13 MPG :doah:

I still say the 83 is the perfect truck. The 3.08 will just mean better mileage which helps a lot right now.
