Need some guidance from the brotherhood

Cummins parts have been absurd lately on their times, then again what is absurd these days…

Can you get one of those Alumiweld rods in there?

Was this a generator specific item? Any other applications? Cummins PN? We have a radiator shop we use at work that can get oddball stuff somehow

Both hoses are on the same end. Cummins specific according to everyone. I am trying to get a part number. Cummins does not want to be forthcoming with it.

At my final straw today. I pulled the 750 pound generator off f the truck. Removed and cleaned the radiator where the crack was. Pressurized it and soaped the crack. 1/2" long along the edge of the tube. Out of desperation, I went to google maps and typed in "radiator repair". Holy crap. It showed a repair shop along with all of the auto parts stores. Vol Radiator Service. Called and they put the owner on. I told him what was going on. He said if I paid 25% more, he would stay and get it done when they close. I loaded up and drove down. Old school radiator repair shop. He said they are at least 3 days behind. Turns down more work than they do. Has a shipping person receiving and shipping radiators. 50% of their work is from out of the area.

All old guys. When they are gone, another skill set will be lost.

He said there is a new aluminum brazing rod and flux developed just for these thin aluminum radiators. I saw that when I was researching. If the truck did not need to be back on the road tomorrow, I would have tried that. May still order some and go pick up a radiator to practice on.

We've got a radiator shop here local to me luckily. Used to do tons of coal mine work but that has dwindled off over the years. They aren't great but at least there is one. I know there used to be a really good old school one like you went to up in SLC.
I hate all these cool old shops and skills going away and everything going to online shopping and throw away garbage parts. We lost our starter/alt rebuild place a few years back.

Your next trick will be to get the truck owner to take a day or 2 off and come back for the new radiator install. #goodluck #itrunsgood #I'mtoobusy :rotfl:

My neighbor owns an electric motor repair business, he still does a good bit of work for the powdered metal plants and hospitals but like he said, how do you tell someone it’ll cost twice as much to rebuild their motor as they can buy new on Amazon, sure his will last another 20 years and that one is junk but most people want price over quality. Same with radiators, guy can buy a new plastic tank aluminum one for $100 or a copper one for $400, he figured he’ll take his chance on aluminum and buy another if it shits the bed. Sad. I always say if you walk into a place and an old timer walks out wiping his hands on a red shop rag you’re in the right place…

Thats why my dad got out of the business. After 40 years, the only thing keeping the doors open was heavy duty truck stuff, hot rods, or stuff that you couldn't find anymore. He still does some stuff out of the garage at the house, but it's a shame. I wanted to keep the business going but I saw where it was headed and unfortunately it would have been a lost cause.

How did it go for you?

There's always a external radiator and Windstar fans, Lol. I hear they are popular!

How about that brazing rod? Can you use that and a MAP torch to seal the leaks? Sorry, just noticed I was a little late to the game on this one...
