lucky i broke down by my moms house, my trucks is running a little hotter then normal. pop the hood.. coolant over flow is full and really hot. radiator is boiling.

happen to me in the past, was a head gasket. dont think so this time. oil is not mixed. going to get a new thermostat in a few was thinking i should start there.

any ideas what i should look for? thanks

a place to start is to check the condition of your coolant, if its rusty looking flush your system. Next step is to make sure your stat is opening properly. make sure your flow is good thru your system to see if you have some type of blockage or a bad water pump.

Before you tear into anything just take a wrench or hammer and tap on your waterneck. My trucks froze up after sitting a while and that unstuck it enough to get where I was going.

You could also just wait for it to cool off, take the neck off, pull the thermostat and make a temporary new gasket with some thing cardboard.

pretty common actually.

how did it fail? if the diaphram is "disolved" or falling apart, your coolant may be old, and often old coolant is acidic. flush that crap out and put new stuff in before more items are damaged. acidic coolant can destroy water pumps and radiators.

Im looking at this myself. ran creek water in the truck in an emergency, drained and refilled when i put a new radiator in but didnt actually flush. now im looking at a new thermostat and most likely a water pump to be safe.

one of the reasons I suggested a flush. I have had friends say when the weather starts getting hot, " hey, why is my vehicle getting hot or overheating " , then we look at their fluid and its like rusty or rusty/green.

stats failing are more common than you would think, especially when it gets hot out.
