here is the short email i ot from him with the basics.

the truck is a 6.2 that sat for a few years. then thay decided to use it again. well heres the story.

We have had the truck in the shop twice and it still won't run. The first place put new battiers and replaced wiring going to the glow plugs. They said it ran good. We picked it up and it died on me. Once it started and you stopped, it would take a couple of hours before it would start again. Had it towed a second time to another shop. They said it was something in the lines, like air. They flushed the lines and ran diagnostics on the truck. It started, picked it up and then it died after running a bit. Now it won't start at all. They said it might be the fuel pump(?). I know I did get more air out so there might be something like a hole in the lines so we want to see how much it will cost to replace the lines. They are getting back with us.

They did say the High Pressure Fuel Injector checked out fine. But now that might be a problem. I thought all diesels had a manual fuel pump with a fuel injector also. I don't know anymore. My mind is going mushie.... They said to find a refurbished HP Fuel Inject could be about $1100 to $1500 as they are scarce. Now we need to decide how much we are willing to keep putting into the truck. I told Mary that the truck won't start because her father is mad for her marrying me.

if anyone can help him out let me know. i am sure he will pay you for your time since most shops dont have a clue on how to work on this stuff.

let me know. thanks guys.

crack the lines one by one at the injector and make sure you're getting fuel to each one on cranking. I would guess you've got either a line lose on one of those or a problem IP. Start cheap and somewhat easy though. Filter is new as well?

Algae can grow in stale old fuel,if the truck sat a long time..it'll coat the filter element and insides of the tank,lines,etc..after it stalls I'd see if there is any fuel at the filter drain cock..of not its being blocked, and after awhile enough fuel might seep thru the filter and let it re-start after a long cranking period..I assume the filter was changed ??.

The lift pump on older 6.2's is a mechanical one like a gas engine has,and if the diaphram ruptures it can let air into the fuel, and dump diesel into the crankcase..some years had an electric pump and I think some had both electric & mechanical pumps...

you can install a clear fuel line, from top off the fuel pomp to the T return lines. when you start you can see if there are air bubbles in the fuel system. on the return on top off fuel pomp there is a check valve, you can take it off with a 9/16 wrench see if its not pluged with debreeze from a failing pomp. often its a glass bead when not pluged you see through it.

i am 6 hrs away from him i cant do this stuff.

he is not vary mech to work on this rig.

it did sit for a few years. so prob has algie in the fuel.

if someone is in md or around frederick area of md and wants to help and make a good friend or extra cash he would pay .

Hey sweetk30, i live just south of D.C. and am not the most knowledgeable guy, but would be happy to see if i could help if hasnt already been sorted out. I did have some starting issues with my rig and replacing the mechanical fuel pump was just the ticket. Very first thing i would do is buy some lubro moly diesel purge, and perform a purge of the fuel pump lines and injectors. If the truck runs on the diesel purge, we know its just a fuel supply problem of some sort.

after that its a matter of draining the old fuel out of the tank, putting fresh good stuff in there, replacing the fuel filter, and then retesting. The mechanical fuel pump would be the next step based on my experience.

Let me know if he still needs a hand. I could swing by on a weekend im not working.

also, i dunno where he's been taking it, but there is a shop here called united diesel, that ive talked to on the phone, that really seems to know its stuff. I just bought a military IP and injectors from a CK5 member, and ill be taking them to united diesel to get them rebuilt and tuned.

the guy i talked to even told me about the pump penninsular diesel uses for hits 400hp 6.5L diesels. It is a DB2 pump with two rotors, to deliver twice the fuel of our stock units. if anyone might be interested in something like that.

Has the filter been changed? Primary and secondary?

If not, possibly gummed up.

Air in the lines? Cracking the lines at the injectors sounds good. Along with topping off the primary with DF2 if its not full. Purge the line at the filter?

Since it is not electronic ignition, theres not a lot to go wrong.... It sounds like something in the fuel delivery department.

Also, the $1500 price for the pump sounds like rape to me, thats $500 for rebuilding the pump, and $1,000 to R&R it.. WTF?

Best of all, tell him to quit taking it to automotive shops, and take it to a diesel shop. If he did take it to diesel shops, ignore that last statement.

Not being technically handy, its really hard to offer much help to him, but at least he is in our CK Prayers. :thumb:
