Whats ck5 coming to? Non gm builds in the driveway and ford tech in the garage:D

But seriously some of the greatest automotive techs I know of (not just gm) are here so this is the best place to ask for help in my opinion.

My brother has a 92 ford f150 with 300 6cyl, drove it home one day left the window cracked, it rained a bunch, next day wouldn't start.

I checked all the usual stuff and found a no fire problem. First checked the control module, actually checked two both were good neither had any affect. Then checked the coil, fired good. I did some searching and found some issues with those models and the distributor pickup. After doing a test I found online I couldn't decide if it was good or bad but a new one was $15 so I grabbed one along with a new cap and rotor and thought I had it fixed but still no fire.

The only other thing I could figure had anything to do with ignition was the ecm. Pulled it out and though it didn't seem bad it had evidence of water, which is when my brother revealed he left the wing window open. I figure water ran down the dash and firewall dripping right on top of the ecm. Picked up a reman unit today and plugged it in, fired right up which brings me to my issue.

when cranking, initial startup, and at certain rpms unloaded everything is fine. but at idle and when the engine is under a load number 5 and 6 cylinders quit firing. I traced it all the way back to the cap which eliminates the plugs and wires. Everything I search says its got to be cap, plugs or wires since it only occurs on two cylinders and always the same ones but Im not getting fire straight out of the cap terminal from 3 different caps that I tried.

Im completely stumped and any help would be appreciated, especially by my 16 year old brother who just got is license and has no wheels.:D

Well, its obvious. You got a 4 cylinder ECM in a 6 cylinder truck.....................

OK, I'm kidding, but it sounded good didn't it?

Best guess, grab the dis. shaft and try to wiggle it. Its unusual for the bushings to be worn that soon, but if the shaft is wobbling the pickup coil might not detect the reluctor.
If not, its still probably going to be something involving the reluctor and the pickup coil.
Possibly related to the vacuum advance. Check the teeth on the reluctor, there is one for each cylinder, so if its cracked or loose on the shaft, that can cause it.
Also check the air gap between the reluctor teeth and the pickup coil. It should be the same for each tooth.

save yourself a lot of trouble.........

I have a Chevy HEI in my Ford 302..... one wire hook up.... works perfect.....

Summit sells a DUI knock off for about 120 bucks.... that is the one I bought.....

good luck !!

As much as I like this idea, the info I found says that the computer gets its signal to fire the injectors from the distributor pickup. So I couldn't just throw it in and go.

Ill check the distributor for wear. Seems like it was a little wobbly when I messed with it. And just to give you some more info, its all electronic, no vacuum advance.

Thanks for your help so far.

eehhhh.... thrown all that **** away and bolt on a carburetor.....:D

electronics are highly overrated....

Sorry....didn't catch the part about the ECM and all that.... I guess that dizzy would be of no help in your case.....

Fullsizebronco.com has SOME pretty good tech, but still alot of boneheads too.

I've yet to see another forum comparable to CK5.

That is why I spend the majority of my time here. Lots of good tech on pirate but lots of bs too. There are also a couple IH forums I visit but I would rather share my IH build here, partly because it has chevy stuff:D

Distributor bushings seem pretty worn, and the reluctor looks warped to me.:dunno: Got a new distributor coming.

Well seems that new distributor has fixed the problem, firing on all six cylinders now.

Seems that Fordum was spot on with the reluctor wheel. There were 2 teeth that had a much larger gap that the others and the bushings were pretty worn. Thanks again for your knowledge:bow:

As every monkey knows, if you fling enough poo, sooner or later some of it will stick.
Glad I was right this time and it helped.
