Well hell. Ive been looking at 90's model crew cabs for some time now. Im pretty picky as far as, i want a fleet side, and it must be a manual. Its hard to find a crew cab in that combo, and infact in the 6 months ive been looking, i cant recall seeing but maybe one other. So i find a real nice 98 crew cab, 454 with a 5 speed with only 130k miles. Its a 3500, and woman driven, lol. The wife says its her commuter. The asking price is $6000

Now, my daily driver, which i would sell when i bought this is a '97 fullsize with a v6 ext cab short bed at 207K miles. It runs just fine, and if i swapped the timing chain, would probably run considerably better. I bought this truck at 164K miles, and have only had to put tires on, and a 10$ ignition part.

Do i really need a 1-ton? Maybe, is there anything wronge with my truck? No, except it aint much of a truck, unless your gonna move a couch.
If i pass up this crew cab, will i regret it, yes.

heres another little bit, I get deployed to iraq for 6 months, at the end of this month. I wouldnt be able to sell my v6 truck in that time, so i would have to get a loan for the full $6k. I would pay off all $6k in my 6 month deployment, and hopefully sell my v6 when i get home..

thoughts?

The truck market is pretty bad right now. If you don't need the truck and don't have the cash for it, why not wait till you get back?

Does "women owned" mean she changed the oil ever?

sounds to me like youve already thought it through and know what it is you really want. I say get it.

my only thing is how LONG a fleetside crew cab is gonna be. factor in trying to drive in parking garages, subdivisions, manuvering through traffic, and finding parking spaces. Youre talking about a big big truck, and while you could probably just drive over alot of stuff, you might well get a ticket for it. Really thats the only cautionary advice i have on it. Not to mention your gas mileage is gonna be in the pooper, but if its what you want, dude, you put your ass on the line for all of us, and you damn well earn your money, so as far as im concerned you buy whatever the hell you want.

Both good points.

bp71k5: i said woman driven, not woman owned. Its an married couple in there late 40's. I talked to the husband mainly, who says he changes the oil. She just like big trucks. What kinda woman commutes in a 1-ton chevy, lol.

Dreamer: I understand the general size of it. They are big as hell, but thats kinda why i like 'em. Itll be an adventure when i drive it, lol
I asked about MPG, and she said she gets 13-15. my 207k mile v6 gets 16-18, so it wouldnt be too much of a difference. I dont really care so much about MPG as it is, but thats also cause gas is $2.39 where i am.
And i sure as hell dont mind going over the occasional curb.

btw, its also 4x4, which dont really have an opion on. Itll be nice to have, but unnessicart.

If it's been maintained, that's a different story. But 13-15 mpg sounds awfully high for a 454 4x4 that size unless it's a diesel.

the type i wanna marry :)

well, hopefully before theyre 50 lol.

and when did they make 454 diesels????? i want one!! a chevy made 7.4L turbodiesel...... that thing would kick ass. so long as it wasnt using 454 gasser parts.

heres a pic.
All it needs is window tint!

well look at the bright side, if you ever wanna become a limo driver, your truck can be your work reference.

For what it's worth: Don't do it. You don't have the money, you don't need it, and it would be sitting around unattended while you're away.

I understand your point, but what about my other 4 vehicles that have sat dormant during my other 2 deployments, totaling 16 months?
My red one now is going to sit unattended while im gone, so whats the difference? The Gov. pays for indoor storage.

I cant believe im saying it, but don't buy it. If you have to take a loan and your current truck is still kickin along.. well?

That 6k would be nice sitting in the bank as a nice e-fund..

strong points, but its the idea of "passing up this deal"

Theres not too many crew cab fleet sides in that body style.
Theres VERY VERY few with a 5 speed manual, which is a much.
it only has 130k miles, and its a good price. hard to pass up
